Discussion

Douglas Bissell (asker) May 26, 2010:
I'm quite inclined to go with Marian's "Folk parade", "ethnic" does not sound right and could be misconstrued. Actually the more I use Proz the more I think it's a great way for mutual help and I'm really regretting not joining earlier. Thanks to all of you for your valuable time and effort.
Marlene Curtis May 26, 2010:
Ethnic parade Not in the USA...
Evans (X) May 26, 2010:
I'd be a bit wary of ethnic parades which are often displays of ethnic allegiance rather than the more folksy ethnographic processions of traditional costumes, dances and music etc.
Consider recent rows over far-right involvement in ethnic parades in Latvia.
Marlene Curtis May 26, 2010:
Folk fits just well too...
Evans (X) May 26, 2010:
Douglas you could substitute "folk" or "traditional" if you want to avoid ethnographic. I agree that we probably wouldn't refer to a procession in this way in the UK. But on the other hand we don't, as far as I know, have processions quite like these. I don't think cheese rolling festivals are quite the same thing. The ones I have come across in the Azores are peculiar events, often appearing to display the contents of an ethnographic museum as they go along.
Douglas Bissell (asker) May 26, 2010:
The problem I have here is actually with the word ethnographic, it sounds very strange to my ear

Folk Parade

See link below. It's really up to the individual as how you would describe these desfiles. They seem part Falla, part neighbourhood collectives showing off their handicrafts and costumes.

ethnographic procession

These are common in the Azores. Does your text come from there?

They are usually referred to as ethnographic processions.

One example among many:

Connected with the traditions of the so-called Popular Saints - St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter - with the passage of the years these festivals have been turned into bullfighting events, with lively "bullfights on ropes", the setting loose of bulls in the streets and performances by toreadores, on horse and on foot, in the arena. The St. John's Festivals usually include an ethnographic procession with old farm implements, folk costumes and the typical vehicles called carros de toldo. The festivals last for several days around St. John's Day, 24th June. They are held in Angra do Heroismo City.

neutral Marlene Curtis : The term "procession" is linked to religious festivals and the site above looks like a poor translation of a Brazilian (or Azorian?) website.

may well be a translation, but not so sure it's a bad one
neutral JOHN PENNEY (X) : Got to get "folklore" in somewhere.
