IMO, that is the only thing that makes sense here. In English, you have the phrase "How one comports onself." Since that's a little archaic, and since what it basically refers to is "personal style," I think "style" or "personal style" is what they mean here.

Style here refers to style in the general sense, as a category of its own, such as one would find in a Style section in a newspaper or magazine. It's the style in total - of the city, of the people. I do not think it means "taking personal style into account" in this particular sentence.

That is what it seems to mean. I believe it sounds better than "going through" in this case.
