This term appears in different contexts, and I have been translating it as "reverse pass" but I am not so sure now. The following are examples of the use of the term:
"JOGADAS ENSAIADAS - Jogadas com inversão de bola e saída do meio campo"
"...o zagueiro direito recebendo a bola, dá seqüência a inversão de lado, por baixo, passando a bola para o zagueiro esquerdo..."
"O líbero, após receber a bola, fará a inversão em direção ao ala esquerdo que ora se posicionara junto a lateral esquerda..."
Do all these instances refer to different things?

As far as I understand it, the original is referring to changing the side of the pitch - or switching play (to the other side)
