Hi everyone! I'm translating descriptions of azulejos. This is the opening line to one of the pieces. I understand the words, but 'pelo contrário' doesn't seem to flow naturally, so I wonder if I'm missing something. Thanks for your help!

São raras em Portugal no século XIX as composições figurativas, únicas, em fachadas de edifícios burgueses de habitação. Pelo contrário, serão revestidos por uma variedade de padrões que originaram uma atmosfera nova nos espaços urbanos que os reflexos das superfícies vidradas propiciavam. Só o século XVII tivera tão grande número de motivos repetitivos utilizados nas arquiteturas – quando os muros dos interiores das igrejas foram, com frequência, integralmente cobertos por talha dourada e azulejos, podendo estes revestir mesmo abóbadas e cúpulas.
