J’ai aussi cassé ma bôme, mon axe de barre… Mais le plus dramatique, c’était bien sûr la panne de moteur qui est arrivée juste avant l’entrée dans l’Atlantique Sud.

There's a great image here

Would I be right in calling this the steering wheel pin, or is it an axle?

steering wheel shaft
Explanation:
I think we'd call this a shaft, wouldn't we?

I don't think I'd usually call the 'column' a 'shaft'; even in EN don't we refer to it as a 'steering column' (cf cars!)?

I found nearly 800 Ghits relating 'steering wheel shaft' + helm, mainly seem to be from patents; whereas the same search using 'axle' only returned a measly 6 ghits.

Here's one that seems relatively clear cut:

(WO/1992/004222) TILTABLE MARINE STEERING HELM

(EN) A tiltable marine steering helm assembly (1) which includes a steering- wheel shaft (5) mounted in a universal joint (4) permitting the steering wheel ...

Asker: Wouldn't that be the column and in "colonne de barre"?

agree  Bashiqa: I'm not a sailor but shaft would be ok for me.

-> Thanks! Something on which it turns, but doesn't rotate...

disagree  Fabio Barbieri: I see no mention of a steering wheel. I suspect this is the bar that regulates the rudder.

-> If you look at the pic Miranda cites, it's clear; the 'shaft' of the rudder has a special name in both FR and EN, as does the 'bar' that regulates the rudder (= tiller). Perhaps your 'disagree' was a little hasty?

agree  Michael GREEN: Seems ok to me Tony ! Though I'm inclined to think that if Miranda doesn't know the answer, it might be more complicated than this ... ;)) And "barre" in this case does indeed mean steering wheel (or helm ...)

Asker: It's an Open 60 with (if I remember correctly) a twin wheel steering system.

Antiques "ships wheel" Nautical antiques,American late 19th century ships wheel made from teak. Measures 58 inches across. Solid brass center measures 9 inches across. Takes a 1 inch SHAFT.

I've just built a 95cm diameter ships wheel. Rim was laminated from 1mm oak veneer in 2m long strips, 2 inches wide to a thickness of approx 38mm - 1 1/2 inches. 2 inch height then planed down to match laminated thickness. Outer corners were rounded off using a 19mm radius router cutter.
Hub turned from a piece of elm, 8 sockets bored for spoke inboard ends and brass bush sits in centre to take SHAFT TO STEERING PUMP.

Traditional ships wheel constructed in acacia timber. Laminated and dowel construction for long life and strength. 6 turned spokes.
Finished in a durable high gloss lacquer.
Centre hub is solid brass with a taper and keyway to fit the STEERING SHAFT.

Asker: Thanks Alex for those great references. As Michael says, that clinches it.
