French term

sous-slotting and sur-slotting

French to English Tech/Engineering Paper / Paper Manufacturing Technical specifications for corrugated cardboard
Hello all,
I am currently translating technical specifications for corrugated cardboard. In the section on one of the types of boxes it mentions the slot depth and length and the phrase "Le sous-slotting n’est pas acceptable, un sur-slotting de 3 mm maxi est acceptable" appears. How would you best advise translating sous-slotting and sur-slotting in this case? I have found some ideas online but none convince me.
Many thanks in advance!
Christina

Hi Nikki. Thank you very much for your answer. I found lower and upper slotting at first, but they didn't quite fit in meaning of the sentence and in the end I went for under and over after finding Kashew's link. Thank you also for your guidelines. I appreciate this.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jun 29, 2015:
I have done a few brief searches. I came across EN sources with "lower/upper slotting", rather than "under/over". Have you tried these terms for your context? Actually, it wld be helpful to say which pair of terms you have considered and rejected and why, essentially to avoid us feeding back terms you have already excluded. Also, even if you have excluded them, it is possible that someone cld in fact confirm that terms you are rejecting are in fact appropriate. So, always a good idea to indicate your ideas, even if cast aside. ;-)

can be on top/underneath or a tolerance - the latter seems probable.

agree philgoddard : Given that it's an English word, I don't see how else you could say it.

disagree kashew : Can't possibly be the same thing - on-slotting twice.
