On évite ainsi la formation sur leur périphérie d'une couche isolante qui serait nuisible à l'attaque du cuivre lors de l'électrolyse.

If the electrodes were cooled in open air they would develop this layer that would be harmful to what? "Attaque" certainly doesn't mean "attack."
