Bible commentary
Proverbs 17:15: "He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD."
Ministers are guilty of this sin when they preach doctrines unscripturally rigid, making those things to be sinful which are not condemned in the word of God, or ***carrying the marks necessary to discover grace to a pitch
too high to suit the generality of true Christians***, or applying to particular persons those terrors that do not justly belong to them. Such was the faults of Job's friends.

try: pitching the marks( = signs? actions?) necessary to discover grace too high
pitch (v) = eg The music was pitched (= the notes in it were) too high for me to reach the top notes. A teacher's got to pitch a lesson at the right level for the students.
pitch (n) = the level or degree of something eg The piano and organ were tuned to the same pitch (= note). If you teach children and adults in the same class, it's difficult to get the pitch (= level of difficulty or interest) right.
