Thanks, but... if they are cagelike things of metal wire, why would they need to be tightly fitting ?

safety goggles

Cage-like eye protection. Hockey players or lacross players wear it mostly, but can be just for protection at some work.
Other version is full-face protection.

You are right to question it.
It looks like that the person writing the text you are working on didn\'t know what real \"cage goggles\" are, basically cages in front of the eye or face, as most of us was talking about, and used mainly for sport. He may have heard the expression, and got mixed up.
The protective eye wear used for safety and should be described in your test is just that.
Probably what the writer wanted to say, that they are not just a bit more protective glasses looking things, but tight fitting ones. These look a bit like a cage, because they have flat fronts and substantial sides, and the eyes \"trapped\" inside, so the writer may have thought, that they are called cage goggles.
So really, they are tight fitting safety goggles, but not cage goggles.

goggles with protective metal cross bars

These are designed for sports applications. However, I think the source probably intended to mean safety goggles with SIDE SHIELDS,
which are common industrial safety equipment.

goggles with transparent sides that go all the way to the temples

Idea is to provide protection against specks of hot metal / drops of acids / other corrosive chemicals etc. You have no doubt seen those on TV or at manufacturing facilities. These glasses (plain - no diopters) resemble a snorkeling mask - they are transparent in the front and on the sides and sometimes have perforation on the sides (for ventilation and to avoid condensation and dew).

Face shield is just a glass / polyacrylic plate (often bent to fit the diameter of the head - so it looks like a part of the wall of a glass cylinder) that offers protection to the face and sometimes neck area. Again, worn by rolling mill/machine tool operators etc. No perforation this time.

Hope this helps!

So bigedsenior is basically right - cage goggles are made of a wire mesh. How this would protect a person agains small high-temperature or high-velocity objects - I do not know... Maybe the author indeed mixed up two types of goggles - protective ones with side shields and cage goggles (used, for example, in team sports for protection of players\' eyes).

In any case, the definition of cage goggles and a link are below.

...The other style features wire frame cages. They are heavily padded around the eye with a cage fastened in front of and away from the eyes. The choices among the wire cage goggles revolve around what pattern the wires are arranged in...

disagree bigedsenior : you are referring to goggles with side shields, not cage goggles

Well... Win a couple, loose a couple... :-) Guess I got carried away on the protective aspect of those glasses - a bit strange to see cage goggles in a chemistry lab or in a foundry, for instance. But I agree with your comment.
