I can see a comparison between two degrees of success
one which is merely good and the other which is "well" or excellent

more context is needed to translate correctly, but the distinction is striaghtforward.

To do well means to be successful, either in a specific endeavor or in general. A student does well when he/she makes good grades. A businessman does well when he achieves his business goals.

On the other hand, to do good means to do good deeds, to act charitably and with integrity:

To translte this distinction in your particular context, one needs to look at a fuller portion of the text.

Measuring morals

In "Measuring Morals," Laura Secor examines various attempts to understand how people make ethical decisions in the workplace and elsewhere. Are Americans cheating more than they used to, too often choosing to do well rather than do good? If so, what should be done about the problem?

But many observers argue that we’ve traded
some of Washington’s old idealism for materi-
alism. From World War II through the 1970s,
people typically were drawn to work for the
government as public servants. Now many
come here to do well rather than do good

The distinction is very fine, but this would seem to fit the context given, with أداء being the more favored.
