El mil es una medida de grosor/espesor de una milésima de pulgada. Equivale a 2.25 micras (micrómetros). Y parece que el grosor de materiales finos se mide en galgas, a razón de 4 galgas = 1 micra.
Supongo que en las conversiones y reconversiones se acuñó este término en el mercado US para hacer comprensible a su audiencia que la galga de estas bolsas equivale a tantos miles; es "mil-equivalente", digamos.
