: MAS stands for "Motoscafo Armato con Siluri": it was supposed to launch its torpedoes and turn back (hopefully) to safety. Here they're talking about a boat that will explode itself on contact with enemy vessel.

On 25 March 1941, the Italian destroyers Crispi and Sella departed from Leros island in the Aegean at night, each one carrying three 2 long tons (2.0 t) motor assault boats of the Decima Flottiglia MAS known as Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato (MTM).[1] Each MTM (nicknamed barchini: "little boats") carried a 300 kg (660 lb) explosive charge inside their bow.[2] The MTMs were specially equipped to make their way through obstacles such as torpedo nets. The pilot would steer the assault craft on a collision course at his target ship, and then would jump from his boat before impact and warhead detonation.

La nave da guerra HMS York (90) fu affondata nel 1941 proprio da uno di questi barchini, come riporta Wikipedia:

Con la designazione generica barchino esplosivo si intende una famiglia di mezzi d'assalto sviluppati dalla Regia Marina a partire dal 1935 e impiegati durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Complessivamente ne vennero realizzate circa 100 unità tra le diverse tipologie, la più numerosa designata M.T.M., Motoscafo Turismo Modificato.
Le dimensioni del mezzo erano: lunghezza 4,70 m, altezza 0,65 m. Era dotato di un motore a scoppio Alfa Romeo a sei cilindri di 75 HP. La carica di scoppio consisteva in un cartocciere cilindrico contenente circa 300 kg di Tritolital.
Il posto di pilotaggio era sistemato all'estrema poppa, il timone era a razze, simile allo sterzo di un autocarro; il pilota era seduto su un piccolo sedile a sbalzo rispetto allo specchio di poppa e basculante all'indietro per facilitare l'abbandono del mezzo da parte dell'operatore (in seguito il sedile fu dotato di uno zatterino sul quale il pilota, una volta catapultatosi in acqua, poteva salire per non subire gli effetti dell'esplosione).

Su questo volume c'è scritto che il MAS 536 non era armato con una BREDA Mod. MAS da 20/65mm, ma da una Breda da 13,2, oltre dai due lanciasiluri a impulso laterale (Ls.L) da 450mm e 6 b.t.g. (bomba torpedine da getto) cioè le bombe di profondità.
(La 20/65 era stata montata sui MAS 526-529 dal 1942).
Mentre per il MAS 562 c'è scritto che montava 2 Ls.L da 450mm, 1 mitragliera Breda MAS da 20/65mm, 1 fucile mitragliatore Breda Mod.1930 da 6.5mm e 10 b.t.g.
