I know you've already chosen an answer, however looking at course information at schools where this subject is taught such as: http://academy.moe.gov.eg/academy/axis/axis1.html it appears that is a course to become a mechanic. Based on the subjects that are taught, I assume that this term must refer to gauges, and I doubt that it refers to surveying.
