September 29th was a sunny spring day and I had the feeling that it was going to be special. At noon, I made my way to the restaurant where I had agreed to meet my colleagues. We were a group of seven at the powwow. Although we couldn’t access the Internet, because the connection didn’t work at the restaurant, we had a great time and could share our experience with one another; we talked about the problems we face in our profession, and of course, about being a dedicated translator. We were lucky since there was a translator who has been in the profession for twenty years and we were very curious about the way they worked before the Internet boom, and she told us that she spent most of the time at the libraries, searching for the right word among hundreds of books! We also talked about the present of our profession and about what we were doing so as to meet the market needs. Above all, not only we nourished from the knowledge and experience of others, but also of the home made pizza and liso (keg beer) that the restaurant served. When the meeting at the restaurant finished (it lasted four hours!) three of us came to my house in order to chat with others around the globe and of course, to have mate. I talked to Ritu, a charming translator from India. I had a conversation with Fabio, who is from Uruguay, my neighboring country and Pham was also still awake to say hello from Vietnam. Needless to say, I met lovely people from everywhere and, of course, we had an unforgettable translator’s day.
We had a great time in this powwow. Although we were only 7 people, we spent many hours talking about our profession, sharing our views and telling the others what we're doing at the present moment. We enjoyed a delicious lunch among really nice people. What else could I expect to celebrate our day? Thank you Luciana for organizing it!
Thanks Luciana for organizing such a beautiful meeting. It was a pleasure to share a moment with wonderful colleagues in a very nice place. I am looking forward to having more powwows.
