Source text - English While Allegra liked to describe herself as a garden-variety lesbian, she knew that the truth was more complicated. Sexuality is rarely as simple as it is natural. Allegra was not entirely indifferent to men, just to men’s bodies. Céline perd son accent et devient Celine. C’est à travers son compte Instagram que la maison parisienne du groupe LVMH a donné le coup d’envoi de ce nouveau chapitre de son histoire, s’inscrivant désormais sous l’égide d’Hedi Slimane, nommé en janvier dernier à la tête de l’ensemble des collections (y compris les futures lignes de
mode masculine, la couture et les parfums).
Pour bien marquer ce nouveau départ, les compteurs ont été remis à zéro, tout le contenu du compte Instagram, avec les images postées par la précédente directrice artistique Phoebe Philo, ayant été effacé. Une seule image s’impose désormais sur le réseau social de la griffe, tout comme sur son site officiel : celle d’une sorte de rideau en papier doré qui semble se dérouler à l’infini en attendant de dévoiler la nouvelle stratégie de la marque, avec le nom de CELINE en lettres majuscules noires sur fond blanc, privé de son accent aigu.

Romano propone casas porque sabe vivir. Sus propuestas dejan adivinar a un niño correteando por los viñedos que rodeaban la casa del arquitecto suizo René Pithoud, en La Tour de Peilz, en los años 70. Era una casa que acompañaba a los niños en sus juegos, les brindaba aventuras y recorridos inesperados.
La arquitectura era juego y Jaime la descubrió jugando, el entorno se fue erigiendo, con toda naturalidad, como plano de referencia.
Para Jaime la arquitectura es una forma de vida y a su vez sale de una actitud que es la de aprender de las formas de vivir. Buenas formas de vivir. Su arquitectura es tan múltiple como lo son sus territorios mentales. Sorprende -en su día casi parecía sospechoso- que nunca ha perseguido ubicarse estilísticamente: 'A mí me gusta una arquitectura de buenas soluciones, controlada... eso sí, con ese punto de ironía inherente a mi carácter y que se plasma fácilmente en los proyectos que realizamos. No sé si la arquitectura debe construirse desde las ideas…'
Jaime no tiene prejuicios estéticos y está abierto a dinamitar sus propios esquemas, por eso le nutre todo: desde la ingeniería automovilística a la descripción somera de un espacio en una novela; el recuerdo de cuando proyectaba instalaciones deportivas racionales y eficientes, tanto como las horas pasadas buscando soluciones con los industriales. La sabiduría y limitaciones de algunos materiales y, cómo no, el cliente, quien de pronto te señala un pintor, un fotógrafo. 'Me encanta, entonces se convierte en maestro y participa de forma creativa en el proceso'.
De alguna forma, Jaime siempre incorpora el arte y levanta el proyecto alrededor de conversaciones. Las referencias cinematográficas, literarias van dibujando un recorrido, un porche, el pasar del día... se trata de dar lugar a espacios para que eso acontezca.

Los encargos pueden llegar de forma muy dispar. Están los prosaicos; como un simple levantamiento de planos o el reconocimiento de unas instalaciones desde el punto de vista administrativo. Ah, pero como Romano y su equipo son concienzudos y minuciosos, ese trabajo de zapa se vuelve interesante, y lleva a un cliente inicialmente distante a ir acercándose, a apreciar el rigor, la precisión, incluso la forma de organizar la documentación... y el proyecto se abre como una flor, se asoma grande...
Luego están los encargos wow... Romano trabaja principalmente en Ibiza, cuna y meca de las infinity pool y de la arquitectura instagram... 'A ver, no pasa nada, si la casa tiene que producir wow, por qué no, es un elemento más con el que trabajar y si tienes una vista espectacular sobre el mar, funciona bien... La infinity pool tiene su momento y su sitio'. Pero después del momento contemplativo, la infinitud y el horizonte no son divertidos para los niños, no están hechos para jugar y no generan demasiadas cosas participativas a su alrededor.
Al igual que la casa de La Tour de Peilz, Jaime hace espacios vitales, para irlos descubriendo, disfrutando de forma paulatina. Casas que acogerán momentos de intimidad, de tristeza o de angustia. Y también para fiesta, pero no sólo para impresionar.
Además, es esencial que la casa esté en proporción y en coherencia con el momento vital de las personas que van a vivir en ella. He tenido ocasión de proyectar, a lo largo de los años, dos e incluso tres casas para la misma familia. Ahí es donde he podido valorar como la arquitectura ha de saber interpretar la personalidad, así como la evolución.'
Es cierto que Jaime se ha especializado, durante los últimos 20 años, en villas de gama alta, principalmente en Ibiza y en ámbito rural. Originariamente, se había dedicado, desde su primer despacho en Barcelona, a locales públicos, de ocio y restaurantes. 'El campo es más tímido, hay que escuchar más...' pero también está cómodo en ciudad, imaginando un barrio tecnológico.
Algunas de esas villas se originan a partir de una reforma, otras acaban en derribo y reconstrucción. Lo existente, la orientación, brinda bastantes ideas. Hay elementos que claman a su recuperación y otras referencias que desaparecerán. Jaime acostumbra a revisitar elementos constructivos, de la arquitectura local o paisajística, trayéndolos a la contemporaneidad. Otras veces rompe patrones, siempre con fineza e ironía. Y no evita la monumentalidad si es con una cierta contención.
Muchas veces, las casas de Jaime Romano son juegos de disposición en torno a un patio, una tradición mediterránea que funciona muy bien. Se acortan las transiciones, se expulsan los pasillos y se conecta todo directamente con el espacio principal, dándole prioridad al espacio de la vida, que a su vez se cuela y busca la luz de los exteriores... Además, encaja a la perfección con el entorno, permite que el edificio respire y se refresque, haciendo incluso innecesario el aire acondicionado.
Cierto... a menudo dan lugar a varios núcleos, estrategias contrastadas de continuidad o alternancia, de exterior o interior, hasta de público y doméstico: una vivienda-pueblo, decía un cliente...
Siempre son construcciones fluidas, conectadas y cómodas, que al mismo tiempo tienen muy en cuenta la preservación de la identidad del lugar y el respeto al medio en que se encuentran.
La paleta de Romano es controlada y puede declinar texturas a partir de un mismo material, matizadas según el uso o la proximidad al tacto. De pronto, también valen el contraste inesperado, la estridencia y la ironía.
El espíritu es el de vivir descalzo. Para describir la vida diaria de las personas que viven en esos espacios, la imagen que viene a la mente es 'descalzo'.
Romano puede proyectar un complejo hotelero en el desierto, pensado todo para mirar al cielo. O plantear clubbing de huella cero. O limpiar un skyline abarrotado. Siempre escuchará a un carpintero, un fontanero o un albañil, pero a veces habrá que forzar fuera de plano y otras permitir que entre en juego lo fortuito, el error, incluso. Sí, se abren campos estilísticos inesperados... como las ideas que puede traer consigo una legislación restrictiva.
La sostenibilidad, la eficiencia y la inteligencia de la arquitectura de Romano pasa por racionalizar incluso los recursos humanos, no sólo los energéticos. Es una arquitectura con inteligencia de vida, que va por delante de a la preconizada inteligencia tecnológica
y que incorpora criterios de funcionalidad social, además de lo ecológico.
La arquitectura de Romano es, además, una arquitectura bien articulada, a escala de la isla. Las fachadas juegan entre pinares, con recesos discretos...
Hay, claro, algunos elementos de la arquitectura ibicenca que han ido apareciendo en sus proyectos. Pero los replantea, como cuando cepilla y deja mate a una viga de sabina para difuminar su color (a veces demasiado anaranjado al barnizarlo) y así permitir que su olor perfume la casa; como cuando refuerza una pérgola con las cortinas de esparto, tan típicas del Mediterráneo, o cuando recupera el Muro Fenicio, ese muro de piedra mampuesto, rejuntado, con la junta rellena de mortero de cal, que aporta impermeabilidad, estanqueidad y una expresividad especial.

Jaime Romano quiere cuidar de Ibiza. Y eso requiere, además de revisitar con respeto elementos constructivos de su tradición, además de insistir en la integración paisajística, pensar también en la arquitectura comercial y del ocio '¡que me sigue apeteciendo!'
Romano insiste en la reforma, en restaurar, consolidar lo urbano y revisitar mucha edificación -comercial, industrial, residencial- muy interesante. Insiste en no dejar por el camino lecciones que no están obsoletas, como la de ir de la mano de los expertos locales, o la de alinearse con otros para impedir el derribo de algunas edificaciones singulares de la isla...
Por otro lado, y aunque el reto de los arquitectos ibicencos es gestionar la sobreabundancia, Jaime sostiene que, por suerte, el concepto del lujo está evolucionando, valorando cada vez más la calidad por delante de la espectacularidad. Por eso hay que seguir proponiendo casas que promuevan el lujo como saber vivir de forma respetuosa y comprometida.
Y pretende seguir haciéndolo con su fórmula perfecta, ese ejercicio colectivo de un equipo consolidado, labrado a lo largo de más de 20 años y con ese formato atípico que da tan buenos resultados, porque combina despacho de arquitectura e interiorismo con tienda.

Jaime Romano thinks of himself as a pragmatic poet.
Looking at his designs we can picture him as a kid,
running through the vineyards that surrounded the family
house of Swiss cult architect René Pithoud in La Tour de
Peilz in the late 60s – Pithoud’s daughter, Maryse, was
a beloved friend of his and they would play together for
hours. The house stood by the children and took them
into adventure. Architecture was a playground and Jaime
discovered how fun it could be.
Jaime sees architecture as a way of living that pairs up
with his devotion to learning about vital experiences.
His architecture is as multiple as his mental territories
are. It is surprising – there was a time when it was even
suspicious – that he has never sought to define himself
stylistically. ‘I like architecture to provide good solutions,
to be balanced, with a touch of irony too. I don’t think
architecture should be created from preconceived ideas
or images. The conceptual framework of the plan is
shaped by the analysis of the site and its character, the
research together with the client and the team, and the
iterations. From that abstract initial pattern, formalization
will arise.’
Jaime has no aesthetic
prejudices and is open to
dynamiting his own plans
during the creative process
if necessary. He finds
inspiration everywhere:
automobile engineering,
a brief description of a
space in a novel by Bertolt
Brecht, his own experience
designing functional and
efficient sports facilities,
and the hours spent with
his brother looking through
industrial manuals. The
wisdom and constraints of
matter are also relevant.
Not to forget the client!
They can suddenly change
their mind and come up
with a long-loved painter
or photographer. Any
of these elements can
trigger a new line of work
and open a new path. ‘I
am always fascinated by
the complex interaction
with the client – that is,
the family that will inhabit
the house. Disagreements
are inherent to the
architectural process, and
I love the way it assimilates
all these tensions and
transfers the initial dream
into the final building.’
‘Where does your
inspiration come from’ is
always a disconcerting
question. Jaime’s answer
relates to Louis Khan’s
definition: ‘To explain
inspiration, I like to believe
that it is the moment of
possibility, when what to do16 17
meets the means of
doing it.’
In some way, Jaime
shapes the project
around conversations and
experiences. Architecture
can convey irony and social
critique. Cinematographic
references are also
frequent on his work. The
films of Jacques Tati. The
particular texture of sound
in Carol Reed’s ‘The Third
Man’ persecution scene in
Vienna’s underground. The
slow and vivid narratives of
Marcel Pagnol – Provencal
holidays at their best. The
shade under a pergola, the
day passing by… Any of
them could be the starting
point of the creative
journey.
Romano’s palette is
always subtle. Different
nuances can be found in
relation with the use and
the proximity of touch.
Unexpected contrasts,
stridency and irony are also
welcome anytime.
Jaime builds up vital
spaces that can gradually
be discovered and
enjoyed. His houses will
host moments of intimacy,
sadness, or anguish.
Moreover, they aren’t just
fancy, but can also bring
you a good party time.
The client supplies
their own universe of
cultural references and
family myths. It’s always
challenging to incorporate
their mental landscape into
the scheme, particularly
when we are talking about
a summer house. Summer
houses are pure hedonism
and calm introspection.
They should provide
an inspiring canvas for
families to lead their lives,
being spaces for moments
of intimacy and love,
shelter, even sorrow and
reconciliation.
The house must be
coherent with the identity
of the person or the family
that is going to inhabit
it. ‘Over the years, I have
had the opportunity to
design two, even three
houses for the same family.
That’s how I assessed
that architecture is meant
to embody a particular
personality, as well as to
allow a further evolution,’
he says.
Houses must reveal
themselves gently,
welcoming one in and
not making a big deal
to impress. And they
sure must keep their
inhabitants comfortable.
First come the residents
that stay in the house,
then come the guests they
welcome for dinner. The
essence prevails over the
overvalued ‘wow’ factor.
When constructing the
houses, Jaime will always
listen to a carpenter, a
plumber or a bricklayer.
Sometimes it will be
necessary for him to
walk away from what was
originally planned, some
others he will allow chance,
even mistakes, to come
into play. Unexpected
stylistic fields open up,
like a restrictive legislation
bringing mischievous ideas
with it.
Projects may come from
many different sources.
Some of them are prosaic;
for instance, a simple
mapping exercise or the
survey of a facility from an
administrative approach.
Since Romano and his
team are so conscientious
and meticulous, those
tasks become interesting
and bring an initially
‘functional’ client closer,
getting him to appreciate
the rigour, the precision,
even the way the
documents are organized.
When this happens, the
project blossoms into
something new.
Many of these projects
in villas originate from a
refurbishment or a ruin,
while others are erected
over a demolished
building. Some elements
are really worth being
recovered, some other
references will disappear.
Jaime is used to revisiting
constructive elements
of the local architecture,
putting them up to date
with a contemporary spirit.
Romano´s architecture
tries to gently integrate its
scale and its references in
the landscape of the island.
The existing elements
found on the site – rocks,
walls, trees – , the context,
the orientation, the views,
the connection to the
old paths, the materials
found... All these elements
provide a framework that
leads – more or less easily
– to great ideas.
The facades harmoniously
meet pine groves, creating
discreet, yet powerful
recesses away from
people’s view. The variation
of volumes merges with
the land. It’s a connected,
comfortable, carefully
articulated architecture,
while respectful with the
native environment and
identity.
Some typical elements of
the local architecture can
be found in his projects.
But he reelaborates them.
Brushing and dulling a
sabina beam to blur its
colour (sometimes too
orange when it’s varnished)
and allow its scent to
give off a perfume to
the house. Reinforcing
a pergola with a couple
of stereotypes, like the
traditional esparto grass
curtains, so typical of the
Mediterranean. Recovering
the so-called Phoenician
Wall, a Freemasonry stone
construction, filling its
joint with lime mortar
and therefore providing a
special expressiveness.

without tradition!’
Jaime Romano’s houses
are often arranged around
a patio, a Mediterranean
courtyard that creates
shaded, ventilated spaces.
Transitions are shortened,
corridors disappear, and
all rooms are directly
connected to the main
space. Living spaces
hold priority, sneaking in
and seeking the natural
light. They match the
environment perfectly
and allow the building to
breathe and cool down,
unnecessary even during
hot evenings.
Patios also tend to
originate contrasted
strategies of continuity and
alternation, connections
between the inside and the
outside, even individual
to collective transitions. ‘A
house turned into town,’ a
client pointed out once.
The sustainability,
efficiency and intelligence
of Romano’s architecture
aim to rationalise both
human and energy
resources. His buildings
involve intelligent
living, which is ahead of
technological intelligence
and incorporates social
and ecological criteria in its
functionality.
Romano is now embracing
the passive house and
the zero km construction
strategies by using local
materials to reduce CO2 emissions, generating
energy through solar
panels and mastering
the construction of
efficient projects and
self-sufficient houses. A
good ventilation scheme,
with shaded pergolas
and vegetation around
the house, improves the
indoors-outdoors thermal
transition.
Jaime also embraces
native vegetation in
gardens, thus preserving
the environment, the
local identity – and the
economics, too. He
encourages his clients to
be respectful to the land‘s
resources, when they try
to impose tropical gardens
within the Ibizan climate.
Jaime Romano cares about
Ibiza. He is respectful
when revisiting traditional
architectural elements
and insists on integrating
the buildings in the
landscape, as well as in
refurbishing, restoring and
consolidating.
The challenge for
architects in Ibiza
nowadays is how to
manage overabundance.
Jaime keeps that in
mind, but with a happy
twist on the concept
of luxury. Increasingly,
the old showiness that
used to define luxury is
evolving towards a sense
of value, quality and
authenticity, which Jaime
has embraced gladly. We
must continue proposing
houses that promote
luxury in a respectful and
committed way, and Jaime
is determined to continue
doing so by relying on
one of his principles:

La economía de las decisiones diarias
La economía, que pretende ser una explicación de cosas que pasan en el mundo, es complicada porque el mundo es complicado. Eso es todo. Cuando prescindimos de las complicaciones, la economía se vuelve sencilla. Piense el lector en un problema típico de un libro de introducción a la economía: Un consumidor prefiere las naranjas a las manzanas, pero le gusta variar de vez en cuando. Ha subido el precio de las naranjas, lo que significa que sus preferencias le salen ahora más caras, de modo que decide tomar manzanas más frecuentemente. ¿Cuánto más frecuentemente? La economía nos dice que hasta que la utilidad que le proporcione el último euro dedicado a las naranjas sea igual a la utilidad derivada del último euro dedicado a las manzanas. Claro. Y muy lógico, ¿no? Pues ya está: la economía es fácil. Y no me pregunte el lector cómo se calcula esa utilidad: limítese a comprobar que el consumidor de nuestro ejemplo ha aumentado su consumo de manzanas y reducido el de naranjas cuando ha subido el precio de las segundas respecto de las primeras.
Ahora preguntémonos por el efecto de una subida del salario mínimo. El trabajador de baja cualificación o recién llegado al el mercado laboral, que cobra ese salario mínimo, se verá beneficiado; quizás uno que antes no quería trabajar, porque el salario que le pagaban era demasiado bajo, ahora se anime a buscar empleo. Al otro lado del mercado, un empresario contrata trabajadores hasta que el ingreso marginal que recibe por la producción aportada por el último empleado es igual o mayor que el coste marginal que de le supone, o sea, el salario mínimo más los costes de la seguridad social. Parece claro, ¿no? “Tú aportas algo que, una vez vendido, me produce un ingreso de 100; si te he de pagar 105 no te contrataré, y si ya estás trabajando, te despediré”. Algunos trabajadores se marcharán a casa con un salario mayor, y otros se marcharán a casa sin empleo. Sencillo, ¿no?
No, porque la vida es más complicada. A veces, la relación entre empleador y empleado es tan sencilla como la que acabo de explicar. Cuando yo era (más) joven, funcionaba en la plaza de Urquinaona de Barcelona un mercado spot de trabajo en la construcción. Apenas salía el sol, los trabajadores potenciales esperaban; llegaba un contratante contratador y decía: “Tantas pesetas por trabajar hoy: ¿estás de acuerdo? ¿Sí? Ve a la calle tal número tal”. Por la tarde le pagaba el salario convenido (en negro, claro), y mañana volvía a empezar el juego.
Pero la vida es más complicada, ya lo he dicho. La relación laboral incluye un periodo más largo, aunque solo sea de unas pocas semanas o meses, y conviene que los trabajadores se encuentren a gusto en su tarea, porque, además, si uno está mal tratado, los otros no estarán felices. Los contratos tienen una duración que hay que respetar. Contratar y despedir no es gratis. Detrás del puesto de trabajo hay maquinaria, tecnología, organización… que van cambiando, también en función de los costes del trabajo. ¿Suben los salarios? Esto crea un incentivo para mecanizar, o para importar en vez de producir, o para deslocalizar la fábrica. O quizás sea el impulso que necesita la empresa para mejorar la productividad, quizás con nuevas máquinas, que pueden, a su vez, llevar a contratar a más trabajadores, si se espera que la demanda del producto crezca, o menos, si la demanda no va a crecer. El salario que se incluye en la relación laboral contiene también muchas dimensiones que no figuran en el contrato: proporciona conocimientos y experiencia a los trabajadores, sirve para retener talento, ayuda a planificar a largo plazo, eleva o deprime el nivel de vida de la localidad…
Detrás de las decisiones que provoca una subida del salario mínimo, hay muchas variables en juego. Y detrás de esas variables hay muchas personas tomando decisiones, en función de otras variables y de numerosas expectativas, con incertidumbre. Por eso, la economía es difícil. Y por eso hacen falta economistas que sean capaces de poner un poco de orden en todos esos factores –y permítame el lector este guiño a la profesión, que bastantes críticas ha recibido ya con la crisis financiera.
La economía en la política
Cuando trasladamos estas cuestiones al plano de la política, el panorama se complica todavía más. El problema al que se enfrenta el político no tiene por qué coincidir con el problema ‘económico’, porque al gobernante o al partido le preocupa no solo elevar el nivel de vida de los trabajadores y evitar que el desempleo aumente, sino también otras cosas: por ejemplo, cómo recibirán sus votantes el anuncio de la medida; cómo tendrá que negociar con otras fuerzas políticas para que apoyen su propuesta; cómo podrá pasar los filtros del proceso legislativo; qué tal caerá la medida en tal o cual oficina pública, cuya colaboración es necesaria; si podrá encontrar la financiación necesaria…
En sus investigaciones, el economista no puede tener en cuenta todas las variables implicadas, de modo que deja fuera las que le parecen menos interesantes para su análisis, que desea que sea riguroso y elegante. Pero entre esas variables pueden estar las que tienen más importancia para el político, porque de ellas puede depender que la medida acabe siendo aprobada. Al político le interesan, sobre todo, la amplitud del análisis, para no dejar fuera nada que sea relevante para el éxito final, así como la seguridad de los resultados y su robustez.
El político deberá tener también en cuenta el marco institucional en el que las políticas se van a aplicar, es decir, las condiciones en que tendrá que actuar cuando el programa se ponga en marcha: por ejemplo, la existencia de otros programas que pueden tener relación con aquel, lo que le obligará quizás a negociar con los que los dirigen, a negociar su financiación, a desplazar las decisiones de una oficina a otra, etc.
En resumen, si el economista desea tener un impacto relevante en la política, deberá desarrollar un argumento amplio: no se puede limitar a mostrar que el gobierno puede obtener unos resultados determinados, sino que deberá bajar a discutir los cambios que la política puede provocar en el gobierno. Deberá también acomodarse al lenguaje del político: por ejemplo, explicar los conceptos técnicos en palabras corrientes, y traducir los resultados estadísticos a términos comprensibles para el decisor. E implicarse más directamente en la tarea de gobierno, tratando de aprender de los que ya están allí, cambiando impresiones con los legisladores, con sus asesores y con los que les preparan su trabajo, etc.
A En favor del economista juega que, si es un asesor externo, puede tener una visión más amplia de los problemas, porque estará más alejado de los procesos políticos y de la urgencia de los problemas. Esto puede facilitar que el programa sea más realista, pero no necesariamente que sea aprobado.
La influencia de los economistas en la política tiene lugar principalmente por tres vías: autoridad profesional, posición institucional y estructura cognitiva.
1. La autoridad profesional del economista está ligada, por de un lado, al estatus de la disciplina, que suele ser relativamente alto (a los ciudadanos todavía les asombra nuestra capacidad de hacer frente a problemas complejos de manera rigurosa), pero variable en el tiempo, y, por otro lado, a su valía personal. Lo que se espera de un buen economista, al menos en teoría, es un análisis objetivo, un juicio independiente y una propuesta que vaya más allá de las posturas ideológicas,: porque eso es lo que le da legitimidad en la política, que recibe así (–o eso esperamos)- un fundamento racional, basado en la ciencia económica: la ciencia como fuente última de autoridad. El coste de esto puede ser que, cuando el economista se decida a entrar a fondo en el juego político, tenga que renunciar a su presunta independencia.
2. La posición institucional se refiere a la presencia de los economistas en las instituciones o entre las élites que toman las decisiones. También aquí las situaciones son muy variadas: por ejemplo, la presencia de economistas al frente de los bancos centrales exige que se deleguen en ellos las decisiones sobre la política monetaria; y su colaboración en instituciones multinacionales les abre una vía de influencia decisiva sobre los gobiernos.
3. La infraestructura cognitiva incluye los principios centrales de la ciencia económica y los modos legitimados por esta para enfocar los problemas; y también los dispositivos de política (policy devices), herramientas que llevan a ver el mundo de determinada manera (por ejemplo, enfocando el crecimiento económico en términos de maximización del producto interior bruto) o condicionan la toma de decisiones (por ejemplo, metiendo las decisiones en el corsé del análisis coste-beneficio), modelando así el modo como con el que los políticos enfocarán los problemas.
La relación entre el experto y el político viene mediada también por el lenguaje. Este influye en varias direcciones. Por un lado, el economista profesional utiliza su lenguaje técnico, a menudo difícil de comprender por el lego, pero que suele acabar imponiéndose, porque aceptar ese lenguaje implica reconocer un contenido científico y técnico que contribuye al prestigio del economista. Pero, por otro lado, el economista debe también acomodarse al lenguaje del político, especialmente cuando se trata de temas no directamente económicos, en los que el experto pierde su ventaja comparativa. En todo caso, la terminología que el economista utiliza no es neutral: los conceptos condicionan las percepciones de los actores y, en última instancia, las decisiones de política. O sea: las ideas se transmiten a través del lenguaje, pero este condiciona el significado de las ideas, como un actor más en la batalla política.
¿Son independientes los economistas que se implican en la política? Es difícil que lo sean. Por un lado, se supone que los expertos son los encargados de ‘decir la verdad’ al poder, es decir, son o pretenden ser apolíticos, solo les preocupa la verdad que pueden conocer con su ciencia; su presencia en la política es la propia de los tecnócratas. Pero esto no se corresponde con la realidad de la amplia presencia de economistas en los procesos políticos, donde tratan de dictar la agenda, definir las opciones abiertas y sus límites, delinear las ventajas e inconvenientes que se derivarán de esas opciones y, por tanto, influir muy directamente en las decisiones y en su puesta en práctica. O sea, el economista entra en el juego del poder.
Hay otra manera alternativa de explicar cómo actúa la profesión de los economistas: como una fuerza autónoma, con criterios profesionales propios. Esto sugiere que los economistas entran en la política un poco a su pesar suyo, más bien como un servicio a la sociedad.
Ambos modelos, el del juego de poder y el de la autonomía, son plausibles; algunas profesiones prefieren el primero, otras el segundo, e incluso es posible que se presenten ambos en diversas proporciones en el mismo entorno. Pero los que solo quieren autonomía pueden encontrarse, a la larga, excluidos de las relaciones con los políticos, que cuando participar en ellas es una forma de quitarles poder.
Conclusión
El trabajo del economista no es fácil, empezando por el contenido de sus estudios y el dominio que exige del lenguaje matemático y de otras técnicas. Pero ser economista tiene indudables ventajas; al menos esto es lo que sugiere el número elevado de economistas que sale cada año de nuestras universidades, frecuentemente en condiciones comparativamente favorables de empleo y de estatus respecto de otros científicos sociales.
Aquí hemos hecho algunas reflexiones sobre su trabajo, con especial referencia a la participación de los economistas en la política. No deja de ser significativo que, después del aparatoso ‘fracaso’ de los economistas a la hora de detectar la proximidad de una grave crisis financiera y una recesión muy dolorosa, todos nos apresuráramos a buscar las explicaciones que los propios economistas estaban dando, acerca de esa crisis. Pero esto pasa también en otras profesiones: suele ser un médico el que denuncia los errores de otro médico.
Acabo con una frase de un economista famoso, John M. Keynes, publicada en 1931: “Sería espléndido que los economistas consiguiesen verse a sí mismos como gente humilde y competente, al nivel de los dentistas”. Es una llamada de atención sobre nuestra arrogancia, aunque también es un reconocimiento de que nuestra profesión sigue siendo necesaria.

The economy of daily decisions
Economy counts on a series of objective principles: for instance, a product or service will be profitable as long as it provides the same or higher usefulness than another product or service of the same price. However, the economic scenario gathers social, political and financial variables that could make the results vary. Thus, when economically speaking, uncertainty is most likely to prevail.
Economy, which is meant to be an explanation of things happening around the world, is complicated because the world is complicated. That’s all. When we leave complications apart, economy becomes simple. Think about a typical problem that we can frequently find in basic economy books: there is a consumer who likes oranges better than apples, but also likes to vary from time to time. The price of oranges has gone up, which means his preferences become now more expensive, so he decides to take apples more often. How often? Economy tells us he will do it as long as the usefulness of every single euro he’s spending on oranges is equal to the usefulness of every single euro he’s spending on apples. Easy and logical, right? There it is. Economy is simple. Don’t ask how to calculate that usefulness: just verify our consumer has started eating more apples and fewer oranges the moment the price of oranges increased above the price of apples.
Now let’s ask ourselves about the effects of an increase in minimum wage. Low-skilled workers and newcomers earning that minimum wage will benefit from it; maybe someone who didn’t want to work because his salary was too low will look for a job now. On the other side of the labor market, a businessman hires new employees as long as the marginal income he gets for the production supplied by every employee is equal or higher than the marginal cost the last employee entails for him, that is, minimum wage plus social security costs. Seems clear, huh? “You give me something that gives me a revenue of 100 once it’s been sold. If I have to pay 105 for you, I won’t hire you, and if you’re already working, I will fire you. Some workers will go home with a higher salary; some other will get home without a job. Easy, right?
No, it’s not, because life is more complicated than that. Sometimes, the relation between an employer and his employees is as easy as referred above. When I was young(er), there was a spot market for building workers in Urquinaona square in Barcelona. As soon as the sun came out, potential workers were waiting. A contractor would come and say, “I’ll give you this amount of pesetas to work today. Is that ok with you? Yes? Now go to that number on that street”. In the afternoon he would pay him as agreed (black money, obviously). The game would start again the next day.
However, as I said, life is more complicated. The labor relation includes a longer period, even if it’s just a few weeks or months, and workers should be happy in their duties; besides, if one is not treated well, the rest won’t be happy either. Contracts have a duration that must be respected. We can’t hire and dismiss for free. Behind every job there is machinery, technology, organization, etcetera, that vary over time, due to labor costs, among other. So the salaries are going up? That’s an incentive to mechanize, to import instead of producing, or to relocate. It might also be the impulse the company needs to improve its productivity, maybe by adding new machines that can in turn lead to hiring more workers, if the demand on the product is expected to go up, or less workers, if the demand is not expected to grow. The salary on a labor relation contains many dimensions and not of all them are visible on the contract. For instance, it provides workers with knowledge and expertise, it retains talent, it helps to set long-term plans, it raises or diminishes the quality of life within the city…
There are many variables at play in the decisions arising from a minimum wage increase. Behind those variables, many people are taking decisions according to other variables and to many expectations, with uncertainty. That’s why economy is difficult. That’s also why we need economists to put some order in all those factors (may I make this little wink to the profession after all the criticism it has received during the financial crisis).
The economy in politics
If we transfer these issues to the political field, the scenario becomes even more complicated. The problem one politician might be addressing will not necessarily be the same as the economic problem, as governors and parties are not just concerned about improving the quality of life of the workers and preventing a possible unemployment rise, but also many other matters. For instance, how their potential voters will respond to the announcement of such measure, how he/she will have to negotiate with other political forces so that they will back it up, how it will get through the filters of the legislative process, how it will be received in this or that public office (whose collaboration is necessary), whether he/she will find the funds for it, and many other.
“The problem the politician is addressing may not be the same as the economic problem. The governor’s concern is not just improving the quality of life of the workers, but also how a concrete measure will affect his (or her) own stability”.
In the porsue of their investigation, the economists can’t possibly take into consideration all the variables involved in it, so they will let aside those that are less interesting to their analysis, which they mean to carry out in a rigorous, elegant way. However, among those relegated variables we might find those that hold the greatest interest to the politician, as they could be crucial for the measure to be approved. On a general basis, the politician is interested in a wide analytical approach, so he/she won’t let aside anything that could be relevant for the final success or for the results to be relevant and solid.
The politician must also take into consideration the institutional frame in which the politics will be implemented. That is, the conditions under which he/she will be acting when the program kicks off. For example, the existence of other programs that might be related to it, which will push him to negotiate with those in charge of them, also its funding, maybe to displace the decisions from one office to another, etcetera.
In summary, if the economist aims to have a relevant impact on the politics, he´ll have to develop a broad argument. Showing the Government that he can achieve a series of particular results is not enough; in addition, he’ll have to discuss the changes those measures will possibly imply for the Government. He will also need to adapt his language to the politician’s; for instance, explaining technical concepts in common words and translating the statistical results into terms the decision-maker can understand easily. Finally, he’ll have to get involved more directly in the Government’s duties, trying to learn from those who are already there and exchanging views with the lawmakers, their advisors and those who prepare their work, among other tasks.
There is something on the economist’s side: in the case he’s an external advisor, he might have a wider vision on the problems, as he will be away from the political processes and he won’t need to solve any of those problems urgently. This can help the program to be more realistic, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be approved.
The influence economists may have in politics takes place along three different tracks: professional authority, institutional position and cognitive structure.
1. The economist’s professional authority relies, on one side, on his/her discipline’s status, which is relatively high in most cases (citizens are still astonished by our capacity to face complex problems in a rigorous way) but may vary over time. On the other side, there’s the economist’s personal value. A good economist is expected (at least in theory) to carry out an objective analysis, an independent judgement and a proposal that goes beyond ideological postures, as that is what legitimates his/her political participation. Thus, the economist will (hopefully) provide the politician with a rational basis, founded on economic science. Therefore, science is the ultimate source of authority. Nevertheless, this has a cost too: if the economist is to go deeply in politics, he might have to give up to his/her presumed independence.
2. The institutional position refers to the economists’ presence in institutions or among the elites that actually make decisions. Here again, the situations are diverse; for example, whenever economists are present in the head of central banks, decisions on monetary policies must be delegated to them. If they’re cooperating with multinational institutions, that can lead to a conclusive influence on Governments.
3. The cognitive infrastructure includes the basic principles of economic science and its legitimate ways to approach problems. It also includes the policy devices, which result in seeing the world a certain way (for instance, focusing on the maximization of gross domestic product as the key for economic growth) and can determine decision-making (for instance, taking the cost-benefit analysis as the deciding factor), thus shaping the way politicians will deal with problems.

Language also mediates the relationship between an expert and a politician, its influence flowing in several directions. On one side, the professional economist uses technical language, which is often inaccessible for average people; however, this kind of language is the most likely to win, as its acceptance implies recognizing a scientific, technical content that contributes to the economist’s prestige. On the other side, the economist should get close to the politician’s language too, especially when dealing with not strictly economic issues, which are no longer an advantage to the economist. In any case, the terminology the economist commonly uses is not neutral; concepts condition the actors’ perception and, ultimately, political decisions. That is, the ideas are transmitted through language, but language conditions their meaning, which means language is an actor in the political battle.
Let’s now ask ourselves if the economists that play part in the political game are independent. The answer is that it’s hard for them to be. On one side, experts are supposed to “tell the truth” to the political power, so they intend to be apolitical and be concerned about the truth they can know through their science only. If we took that as a fact, their presence in politics would be a technocrat one. However, this isn’t what actually happens with the wide economists’ presence in political processes, where they try to dictate the agenda, to define the available options and, in consequence, to influence very directly the decision-making and implementation. That means the economists do take part in the political game.
There’s an alternative way to explain how the economists’ profession works: as an autonomous force, with its own professional criteria. This suggests the economists get involved in politics reluctantly, as if it was a service to society.
Both models (the one of the power game and the autonomous one) are plausible. Certain professions prefer the first one, some other the second, it’s even possible to have different proportions of them both in the same environment. However, only those who wish to stay independent are likely to be excluded from the political relations long term, as taking part in them this way will be taking power away from the politicians.

Conclusion
The economist’s work is not easy, from their studies to the mastery it requires on mathematical language and other techniques. Nevertheless, being an economist has unquestionable advantages, or that is at least what we can deduce from the high number of economists graduating each year, often under comparatively favorable employment conditions and better status than other social scientists.
We have given some careful thought about their job in this article, with particular reference to the economists’ participation in politics. It’s meaningful that, after their dramatic ‘failure’ to predict the proximity of a severe financial crisis and a painful recession, a lot of us hurried to find the explanations economists themselves were giving regarding that crisis. Nevertheless, this happens in other professions too: it is usually a doctor who reports another doctor’s mistakes.
To end, let me quote famous economist John M. Keynes, who wrote in 1931, “If economists could manage to get themselves thought of as humble, competent people on a level with dentists, that would be splendid”. It’s a warning call on our arrogance, but it’s also an acknowledgment that our profession is still necessary.

He is not without gravity of demeanor; but the strained nostrils stamp it as the gravity of the humorist. His eyes are clear, alert, of sceptically moderate size, and yet a little rash; his forehead is an excellent one, with plenty of room behind it; his nose and chin cavalierly handsome. On the whole, an attractive, noticeable beginner, of whose prospects a man of business might form a tolerably favorable estimate.
THE YOUNG LADY (handing him the glass). Thank you. (In spite of the biscuit complexion she has not the slightest foreign accent.) THE
DENTIST (putting it down on the ledge of his cabinet of instruments). That was my first tooth.
THE YOUNG LADY (aghast). Your first! Do you mean to say that you
began practising on me?
THE DENTIST. Every dentist has to begin on somebody.

She shakes her dress into order; looks inquisitively about her; and goes to the window.) You have a good view of the sea from these rooms! Are they expensive?
THE DENTIST. Yes.
THE YOUNG LADY. You don't own the whole house, do you?
THE DENTIST. No.
THE YOUNG LADY (taking the chair which stands at the writing-table and looking critically at it as she spins it round on one leg.) Your

THE DENTIST. Five shillings.
THE YOUNG LADY (producing a crown piece). Do you charge five

He has his sister's delicate biscuit complexion, and is built on the same small scale; but he is elastic and strong in muscle, decisive in movement, unexpectedly deeptoned and trenchant in speech, and with perfect manners and a finished personal style which might be envied by a man twice his age. Suavity and selfpossession are points of honor with him; and though this, rightly considered, is only the modern mode of boyish self-consciousness, its effect is none the less staggering to his elders, and would be insufferable in a less prepossessing youth. THE YOUNG GENTLEMAN. Am I on time?
THE YOUNG LADY. No: it's all over.

Se entrevé en él una actitud burlona y desconsiderada que delata al joven descentrado que es, un hombre en busca de aventuras y diversión escondido tras la apariencia de un dentista recién instalado a la búsqueda de nuevos clientes. Hay cierta solemnidad en su expresión, pero los torcidos orificios de su nariz le hacen parecer un cómico en su vis seria. Matthew was irritable after a long day, a disgruntled client and an unsatisfactory encounter with his· new boss. He did not appreciate what struck him as naive and misplaced admiration for another man on the part of his fiancée.
'He wasn't go ogling people,' said Robin. 'I was the one doing the googling, while he was working on another case.'
'Well I don't like the sound of the set-up. He's sleeping in his office. Robin; don't you think there's something a bit fishy there?'
'I told you, I think he's just split up with his partner.'
'Yeah, I'll bet he has,' said Matthew.
Robin dropped his plate down on top of her own and stalked off into the kitchen. She was angry at Matthew, and vaguely annoyed with Strike, too. She had enjoyed tracking Lula Landry's acquaintance across cyberspace that day; but seeing it retrospectively through Matthew's eyes, it seemed to her that Strike had given her a pointless, time-filling job.
'Look, I'm not saying anything,' Matthew said, from the kitchen doorway. 'I just think he sounds weird. And what's with the little afternoon walks?'
'It wasn't a little afternoon walk, Matt. We went to see the scene of the - we went to see the place where the client thinks something happened.'
'Robin, there's no need to make such a bloody mystery about it,' Matthew laughed.
'I've signed a confidentiality agreement; she snapped over her shoulder. 'I can't tell you about the case.'
'The case.'
He gave another short, scoffing laugh.
Robin strode around the tiny kitchen, putting away ingredients, slamming cupboard doors. After a while, watching her figure as she moved around, Matthew came to feel that he might have been unreasonable. He came up behind her as she was scraping the leftovers into the bin, put his arms around her, buried his face in her neck and cupped and stroked the breast that bore the bruises Strike had accidentally inflicted, and which had irrevocably coloured Matthew's view of the man. He murmured conciliatory phrases into Robin's honey-coloured hair; but she pulled away from him to put the plates into the sink.
Robin felt as though her own worth had been impugned. Strike had seemed interested in the things she had found online. Strike expressed gratitude for her efficiency and initiative.
'How many proper interviews have you got next week?' Matthew asked, as she turned on the cold tap.
'Three,' she shouted over the noise of the gushing water, scrubbing the top plate aggressively.
She waited until he had walked away into the sitting room before turning off the tap. There was, she noticed, a fragment of frozen pea caught in the setting of her engagement ring.

Strike had already spent some time outside the hospital trying to establish his bona fides in this respect.
'No, I'm not a journalist. Like I said, I know Lula's brother.'
'You a friend of his?'
'Yeah.. Well, not exactly a friend. He's hired me. I'm a private detective.'
She was instantly, openly scared.
'Whaddayuhwanna talk to me for?'
'There's nothing to worry about ... '
'Whyd'yuhwanna talk to me, though?'
'It's nothing bad. John isn't sure that Lula committed suicide that's all.'
He guessed that the only thing keeping her in the seat was her terror of the construction he might put on instant flight. Her fear was out of all proportion to his manner or words.
'There's nothing to worry about,' he assured her again. :John wants me to take another look at the circumstances, that's-'
'Does 'e say I've got something to do wiv 'erdying?'
'No, of course not. I'm just hoping you might be able to tell me about her state of mind, what she got up to in the lead-up to her death. You saw her regularly, didn't you? I thought you might be able to tell me what was going on in her life.'
Rochelle made as though to speak, then changed her mind and attempted to drink her scalding coffee instead.
'So, what- 'er brother's trying to make out she never killed 'erself? What, like she was pushed out the window?'
'He thinks it's possible.'
She seemed to be trying to fathom something, to work it out in her head.
'I don't 'ave to talle to you. You ain't real police.'
'Yeah, that's true. But wouldn't you like to help find out what-'
'She jumped,' declared Rochelle Onifade firmly.
'What makes you so sure?' asked Strike.
'Sometimes it jus' takes you over. It's an illness,' she said, although she made the words sound like 'it's uh nillness'.
Nillness, thought Strike, for a second distracted. He had slept badly. Nillness, that was where Luna Landry had gone, and where all of them, he and Rochelle included, were headed. Sometimes illness turned slowly to nillness, as was happening to Bristow's mother ... sometimes nillness rose to meet you out of nowhere, like a concrete road slamming your skull apart.
He was sure that if he took out his notebook, she would clam up, or leave. He therefore continued to ask questions as casually as he could manage, asking her how she had come to attend the clinic, how she had first met Lula. Still immensely suspicious, she gave monosyllabic answers at first, but slowly, gradually, she became more forthcoming.
Her own history was pitiful. Early abuse, care, severe mental illness, foster homes and violent outbursts culminating, at sixteen, in homelessness. She had secured proper treatment as the indirect result of being hit by a car. Hospitalised when her bizarre behaviour had made treating her physical wounds nearly impossible, a psychiatrist had at last been called in.
She was on drugs now, which, when she took them, greatly eased her symptoms. Strike found it pathetic, and touching, that the outpatient clinic where she had met Lula Landry seemed to have become, for Rochelle, the highlight of her week. She spoke with some affection of the young psychiatrist who ran the group.
'So that's where you met Lula?'
'Di'n't her brother tell ya?'
'He was vague on the details.'
'Yeah, she come to our group. She wuz referred.'
'And you got talking?'
'Yeah.'
'You became friends?'
'Yeah.'
'You visited her at home? Swam in the pool?'
'Why shou'n't I?'
'No reason. I'm only asking.'
She thawed very slightly.

—Era yo quien googleaba, no él —replicó Robin —. Él estaba trabajando en otro caso.
—Pues la cosa no suena muy bien que digamos. ¿Se puede saber por qué está durmiendo en su oficina? A mí no me huele bien.
—Ya te dije que acaba de romper con su pareja.
—No lo dudo.
Robin dejó el plato que le traía sobre el suyo propio y se dirigió enojada a la cocina. Estaba enfadada con Matthew, y también un poco con Strike. Había disfrutado rastreando al conocido de Lula Laundry en el ciberespacio, pero al contemplar de nuevo la escena desde la perspectiva de Matthew llegó a la conclusión de que el trabajo que le había confiado Strike era insignificante e inútil.
—A ver, no tiene por qué ser necesariamente malo —dijo Matthew asomándose a la puerta de la cocina–. Solo digo que es un poco raro. ¿Y a qué vienen esos paseítos?
—No fue un paseíto, Matt. Fuimos a ver la escena del… El sitio donde el cliente dice que ha pasado algo.
—Tampoco hay que montarse una novela policiaca —rio Matthew.
—De todos modos he firmado un acuerdo de confidencialidad —repuso ella por encima del hombro —. Así que no puedo darte más detalles del caso.
—“Del caso”. Madre mía.
Soltó una risita burlona. Robin se movió a zancadas por la cocina, guardando botes de comida y cerrando las alacenas de un portazo. Matthew se quedó mirándola un rato y empezó a sentir que no se había portado bien con ella. Se acercó a ella por la espalda y la rodeó con sus brazos, hundiendo la cabeza en su cuello y acariciando el pecho en el que Strike le había hecho un cardenal sin querer, algo que había afectado irrevocablemente a su opinión sobre él. Murmuró palabras de perdón sobre su pelo color miel, pero ella se apartó y llevó los platos al fregadero.
Robin se sentía como si hubiesen cuestionado su propia valía. Strike había mostrado interés por la información que había encontrado en Internet. Le había agradecido su eficiencia y su iniciativa.
—¿tienes alguna entrevista decente la semana que viene? –preguntó Matthew. Abrió el grifo de agua fría.
—Sí, tres —gritó mientras el agua caía a chorros sobre el fregadero. Lo frotó con rabia.

Su expresión cambió al instante. Tenía el miedo pintado en la cara.
—¿Y de qué… de qué quiere hablar conmigo?
—No hay por qué preocuparse…
—¿Para qué quiere hablar conmigo? —repitió, interrumpiéndole.
—Por nada malo. John no está del todo seguro de que lo de Lula haya sido un suicidio, solo eso.
Dedujo que la única razón por la que no echaba a correr era su temor a (…) Para lo que él le había dicho, su miedo era totalmente desproporcionado.
—No hay nada de qué preocuparse —dijo, tratando de calmarla —- John me ha pedido que indague un poco sobre sus circunstancias, y…
—¿Te ha disho que yo tuve algo que ver?
—Claro que no. Pero me dije que quizá tú supieras cómo se sentía, que la llevó a la muerte. Os veíais bastante, ¿no? No ´se, pensé que quizá podrías decirme por qué estaba pasando en ese momento.
Por un momento, pareció que Rochelle iba a decir algo. Finalmente calló y acercó sus labios a la humeante taza de café.
—Entonces… ¿Su hermano quiere que parezca que no se suicidó? ¿Que la empujaron o algo así?
—Cree que es una posibilidad.
Su expresión se tornó meditativa, como si estuviera intentando desentrañar algo.
—No tengo por qué hablar contigo. No ere policía.
—Sí, ya lo sé. ¿pero no te gustaría averiguar…?
—Se tiró —dijo Rochalle Onifade con firmeza.
—¿Por qué estás tan segura?
—Lo sé y punto.
—Pues a todo el mundo le ha sorprendido mucho. A toda la gente que la conocía.
—Etaba deprimida. Podía pasar en cualquier momento. Como conmigo. A veces no pùedes con ello. Es una enfermedad —dijo, aunque tal como lo pronunció parecía que había dicho fermedad.
Fermedad, pensó Strike, distraído. No había dormido bien. Fermedad, ahí se había ido Luna Laundry. Ahí irían todos, incluidos Rochelle y él mismo. A veces la enfermedad se convertía poco a poco en fermedad, tal como le estaba pasando a la madre de Bristow. A veces la fermedad salía de la nada y se precipitaba hacia tu cabeza, como un muro de hormigón que te reventara los sesos.

Los Amigos.
In the heart of Ibiza there is an ancient plain, scribbled with low drystone walls and dusty caminos, peppered with whitewashed wells and Moorish irrigation channels. On that plain sits a house - brutal, boxy, unapologetic. Almost entirely cast from ash-blonde concrete, at first glance its design seems at odds with the arcadian nature of the landscape. It appears solitary, adrift on a wind-whipped prairie and bleached bone-white by the sun. But look closer and a subtle co-dependence becomes clear. The house may contrast with its immediate surroundings, but every element, every window, every corner of the property, is utterly defined by the horizon.
Los Amigos was built in 2014, a sprawling five-bed home with an additional self-contained annexe. The main building is low, long, poised upon the red earth. The two distinct ends of the home are separated by an internal patio so fundamental to the build that it appears as though the house was rent apart to accommodate it. Within this patio grows an olive tree, its branches outstretched toward the light that pours in above. The concrete walls of the home are punctuated by glass, with windows appearing on an almost monolithic scale. In the near sightline are olives, carobs, clumps of fragrant Mediterranean herbs. The medium view is fractured, intermittent objects coming into focus – a lone poplar standing sentry on the plain; a windmill, turning slowly in a lazy breeze. Far beyond that, the eye must travel, over fields and forest to the mountains, whose jagged silhouette encloses the plain. It is a depth of field quite unique to this location.
Inside the house itself are five independent structures – buildings within in a building, if you will - whose appearance defines the personality of the house. The structures were created using a poured concrete technique known as shuttering, during which wet concrete is poured into pre-made wooden casings and left to set. Once the concrete hardens, the framework is removed, revealing a unique imprint of wooden planks upon the surface. The overall appearance is fragile, almost ephemeral. We are left with the memory of wood, captured at a moment in time. Any final irregularities are simply part of the process’s appeal.
These five buildings, with their rustic leitmotif, house the bathrooms, spaces of almost monastic simplicity whose vernacular is one of textures – shuttered concrete, pebbles, polished cement – all of it drenched in the light that flows from the glass ceilings. Showers become mirrors of themselves – one indoor, one out, separated by a silently pivoting glass door. This is Romano’s signature at work – a seamless shifting from interior to exterior, darkness to light, sun to shade. Nowhere is this more apparent at Los Amigos than in the grand exterior terrace. Stretching the length of the building and parallel to the creamy concrete pool, the decked terrace reflects the linear pattern of the wooden planks. Above it, Romano’s lightweight steel framework hovers, weightless as a cicada, extending the tentacles of the house far out into the scrubland. At the framework’s edge begins another, more organic, fabrication – a living canopy composed of interwoven branches. If this addition seems incongruous, it’s not – for hundreds of years, Ibicencos have planted ramadas – structures of vines and creepers - to create additional shade around their doorways. If Romano’s steel structure represents the traditional finca porxo, then the ramada is a natural addition. Romano’s architecture is always multi-layered and it’s clear that these anthropological references are anything but ambiguous: with its steel framework and concrete casings, ramada canopy and ancient olive trees, there’s an underlying sense of agriculture, of industrialism to Los Amigos. Set in a field, amid centuries-old farmland, it is perhaps a very contemporary kind of almacen.

“Viernes para el futuro”, un evento que también se conoce como una "huelga climática escolar", se organizó para pedir a los gobiernos políticas e intervenciones rápidas para combatir el cambio climático y el calentamiento global. Estos viernes de protesta fueron impulsados en 2018 por Greta Thunberg, una estudiante sueca de 16 años que se ha convertido en el símbolo y la representante más famosa del nuevo movimiento ambientalista estudiantil. Su discurso político ataca especialmente a los gobiernos occidentales, a los "ricos" y a las élites. Aun así, no toda la participación en el calentamiento global se encuentra en los países desarrollados, como se puede observar en los mapas mundiales de contaminación del aire.
Las emisiones de C02 repuntan con la recuperación económica, y se espera que el suministro de energía se multiplique por diversos múltiplos en los próximos 30 años. La distribución de las emisiones es variada, pero el 41% del total se concentra en el transporte, la calefacción y la industria. Estas representan una considerable parte de la economía que aún no puede confiar en alternativas para la generación de energía, y que sigue dependiendo en gran medida de los combustibles fósiles.
/La estrella ascendente de la izquierda del partido demócrata de los EUA, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, propone un “Green New Deal” para combatir al mismo tiempo el cambio climático y la desigualdad. Franklin Delano Roosevelt propuso su New Deal para salir de la Gran Depresión y al mismo tiempo consolidar la democracia liberal y limitar los excesos del capitalismo desregulado./
El objetivo es conseguir un 100% de energía limpia rápidamente y avanzar hacia 0-emisiones en términos netos en el horizonte de 2050. Para conseguirlo se necesitan grandes inversiones en infraestructuras energéticas y de transporte, así como para la reconversión y formación de trabajadores. Se plantean subsidios masivos para las industrias verdes y una garantía federal de empleo. Como suele ser usual en estas grandes declaraciones políticas de intenciones, los costes no están calculados, y se afirma que el programa lo van a pagar las rentas elevadas con fuertes subidas de impuestos.
Tomemos como dado el objetivo de contener la temperatura en un aumento máximo de 1,5C – argumento apoyado recientemente por el panel sobre el cambio climático (IPCC) – en relación al nivel preindustrial. Se plantean dos cuestiones: si el objetivo de suprimir las emisiones de C02 en 2050 es factible, y cuál es el coste de la transición a este escenario. Según el IPCC la producción de petróleo y gas debe bajar un 20% en 2030 y un 55% en 2050 para alcanzar el objetivo de contención de temperatura. Sin embargo, nos apoyamos todavía en un 85% en el consumo de combustibles fósiles y las grandes petroleras (las majors) auguran una expansión de la demanda y producción de petróleo y gas de más del 10% para 2030. El panorama se complica si a ello añadimos la incertidumbre sobre la eficacia de las tecnologías para controlar emisiones (como las basadas en el hidrógeno y la captura del carbono) así como la reacción social a la subida de precios energía -tal como hemos observado de forma virulenta en el caso de los "chalecos amarillos" jaunes en Francia. Además, no hay consenso en cómo se debe diseñar el mercado eléctrico al encaminarnos a una situación de coste marginal de generación nulo pero que necesita importantes inversiones en capacidad de producción. En efecto, las nuevas generaciones de tecnología renovable, como la eólica onshore y la fotovoltaica están produciendo a costes cada vez más bajos pero al mismo tiempo necesitan de las tecnologías de generación convencional, como los ciclos combinados, para proporcionar la necesaria continuidad y flexibilidad a la oferta de electricidad.
En enero de 2019 un conjunto de eminentes economistas de los EUA—que incluían entre otros 27 premios Nobel y los cuatro últimos presidentes de la Reserva Federal, tanto demócratas como republicanos — hicieron una propuesta en el Wall Street Journal para combatir el cambio climático. Estos economistas proponen un impuesto al carbono para que su coste social (la externalidad en el clima) sea tomada en cuenta en las decisiones de todos los actores económicos. Janet Yellen, asesora del Consejo de Liderazgo Climático y ex presidenta de la Reserva Federal de los EUA, considera el impuesto como la forma más efectiva e inmediata de abordar el cambio climático. Este impuesto se propone que sea creciente en el tiempo para fomentar la innovación tecnológica y la inversión al dar certidumbre a las empresas, y reemplace regulaciones menos eficientes y distorsionadoras. Abordan también el problema de la fuga del carbono (carbon leakage) con un impuesto de ajuste en la frontera para evitar el dumping de países que no son respetuosos con el medio ambiente. Finalmente, sugieren que el impuesto sea neutral en términos de ingresos para el estado y que sea devuelto como un dividendo universal a los ciudadanos, redistribuyendo sobre una base per cápita beneficiando desproporcionadamente a los hogares más pobres, que compense la subida de los precios de la energía.
Esta propuesta está basada en el análisis económico y tiene en cuenta la necesidad de construir una coalición ciudadana a favor de la actuación en relación al cambio climático. Las fuerzas políticas tanto en los EUA como en el resto del mundo harían bien en considerarla. En España y Alemania se ha malgastado dinero público para fomentar tecnologías renovables que han resultado obsoletas rápidamente, y que han beneficiado la curva de aprendizaje tecnológica de países como China en fotovoltaica, por ejemplo.
China y EUA se disputan el liderazgo mundial también en el campo de la energía. China está tomando el liderazgo en tecnologías de baja intensidad de carbono, incluyendo las nuevas generaciones de tecnología nuclear. La gran pregunta es cuál será el papel de la debilitada Europa, muy ambiciosa en objetivos proclamados, pero poco unida en políticas efectivas. Europa puede llegar a ser irrelevante en el camp geopolítico. Su dependencia del gas ruso no va a disminuir y la Unión Europea (UE) no habla con una sola voz con Rusia. La UE necesita una estrategia de descarbonización que la haga más competitiva internacionalmente y para ello se necesita avanzar en la integración de su mercado energético con un regulador único, con las interconexiones necesarias, y sobre todo con una política a nivel europeo que la constituya como actor relevante en el contexto global.

These “protest Fridays” were prompted on 2018 by Greta Thunberg, a 16 year old Swedish student who has therefore become the most renown personality and symbol of this new environmentalist student movement. Her political speech especially lashes out western Governments, “the rich” and the elites. Still, not all agents of global warming are located in developed countries, as we can see on the global maps referring air pollution.
CO2 emissions are going up with economic recovery and energy supply is foreseen to be multiplied over the next thirty years. The sources of these emissions are diverse, but 41% of them come from transport, heating and industry. The three of them make up a significant portion of an economic activity that is still unable to rely on alternatives for power generation and depends largely on fossil fuel.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed his New Deal to recover from the Great Depression while ensuring liberal democracy and curbing the excesses of deregulated capitalism./
Today, the goal is reaching a 100% clean energy environment in the short term and walk towards zero emissions on a net basis in the run up to year 2050. To do so, a great investment in transport and energy infrastructures is needed, as well as in workforce training and reskilling programs. Thereon massive subsidies for green energies and an employment federal guarantee are on the horizon. As usual when it comes to such forceful political declarations of intent, the costs have not been calculated and it is claimed that this program will be financed with a strong rise on taxes from the top earners.
Let us focus on the objective to keep increases in temperature under 1.5 °C ―as supported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ― compared to pre-industrial levels. Two questions arise here: whether the goal to phase out CO2 emissions by 2050 is attainable and what the cost will be to reach this scenario. According to IPCC, a 20% decrease on gas and petrol production is needed to achieve the temperature contention goal set for 2050. However, fossil fuel still makes up 85% of the global energy and petrol majors predict a 10% expansion on petrol and gas production and demand by 2030. The picture is complicated by the uncertainty on whether emission control technologies will be efficient (for instance, those based on hydrogen and carbon sequestration) and by the social reaction to the increase of energy prices, as we have virulently witnessed with the yellow vests movement (“gilet jaunes”) in France. Moreover, there is no consensus on how the electric market should be designed to move towards a zero marginal generation cost while important investments in production capacity are needed. Indeed, the emerging renewable energy technologies, such as photovoltaic and onshore wind power, are reducing their production costs, but still need conventional generation technologies, such as combined cycles, to ensure a sustained, flexible electric offer.
In January 2019, a panel of eminent American economists ―including 27 Nobel prize winners and the last four Federal Reserve chairmen, among others¬¬― published a proposal on Wall Street Journal to fight climate change. Such proposal consists in creating a carbon tax so that its social costs (the externality on climate) is more likely to be taken into consideration by the economic agents. Janet Yellen, Leadership Council on Climate Change Advisor and former Federal Reserve President, argues this tax is the fastest, most effective way to deal with climate change. The tax is meant to increase over time to encourage technological innovation and investment ―as the companies will be stepping on firm ground― and to replace distorting, less efficient regulations. Besides, a border adjustment tax will be set to prevent carbon leakage and dumping in those countries that show no respect for the environment. Finally, the tax is suggested to be neutral in terms of revenue for the State, and should be refunded to the citizens as a universal dividend on a per capita distribution which must ensure the poorest households take benefit and make up for the increasing energy prices.
This proposal is based on an economic analysis and takes account on the need to build a citizen action group in favor of new measures relating climate change. Political forces in U.S. and worldwide should take this into consideration. Spain and Germany have wasted public funds by promoting renewable technologies that soon became obsolete. Meanwhile, countries like China have improved their technological learning curves on photovoltaic energy and other.
China and U.S. are competing for the global leadership in the energy field too. The Asian giant is taking over in low carbon technologies, including the new generations of nuclear technology. The big question is the role a weakened Europe will take, having the old continent been ambitious when proclaiming its goals, but little united to sort out efficient policies. Europe is thus likely to be irrelevant in the geopolitical field. Its dependence on Russian gas will not get smaller and the EU does not speak to Russia with one voice. The EU needs a decarbonization strategy to be more effective internationally, which means it needs to move forward to integrate its energy market with a single regulator and the necessary interconnections. Above all, the EU is in need of common policies that are able to help it become a relevant agent in the global context.

Abstract: In this essay, we examine intimate partner violence (IPV) and infidelity among cohabiting and married couples with different levels of religious commitment and different beliefs about male headship. Although religious couples may face unique challenges in dealing with IPV after it happens, our evidence from an 11-country sample suggests women in highly religious couples are neither more nor less likely to be victims of IPV, and men in highly religious couples are neither more nor less likely to be perpetrators of IPV. Men and women in highly religious couples who believe in male headship are also similar to other couples when it comes to women’s victimization and men’s perpetration. These findings suggest that recent reports and scholarship about IPV in religious contexts are important to consider; IPV is just as prevalent in these settings as it is elsewhere, even though religious contexts do not seem to heighten the incidence of IPV. With respect to infidelity, we find that both men and women in highly religious couples are less likely to have cheated on their cohabiting partner or spouse than are those in less/mixed religious couples. Men in shared secular couples are also less likely to cheat than those in less/mixed religious couples. Joint religious commitment and a joint lack of religious commitment are associated with less cheating, suggesting that a clear, shared belief about the importance of religion—whether in favor of religion or against it—bolsters commitment to intimate relationships.
Intimate relationships can be sources of joy and fulfillment. But they can also be the source of considerable suffering. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 30% of ever-partnered women around the world have experienced intimate partner violence (hereafter, IPV). And although global numbers on infidelity are hard to come by, many couples deal with a cheating partner: even in the United States, where most adults disapprove of extramarital sex, about 15% of ever-married adults say they have cheated on their spouse. In this essay, we explore whether and how religion is associated with these sources of pain within intimate partnerships.
Religion and Intimate Partner Violence
Public discourse about religion and IPV often highlights the ways that religion justifies abuse or encourages women to stay in abusive relationships. By proof-texting (i.e., selectively using scripture) from “patriarchal passages” of their scriptures, religions can provide frames that lead men to see IPV as a divinely-sanctioned expression of their patriarchal authority and women to accept abusive relationships as divinely-ordained trials to be endured rather than problematic situations from which to flee. The idea that religion can legitimate abuse was spotlighted in a recent series of stories edited by Haley Gleeson and Julia Baird for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). These pieces illustrate in poignant fashion how scriptural passages and religious doctrine are sometimes used in relationships and religious bodies to foster and perpetuate abusive partnerships. The scope of the ABC investigative journalism was wide; Protestant, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Sikh communities in Australia were all implicated.
These concerns about IPV among religious couples are not new. In 1998, after the Southern Baptist Convention released a statement calling on wives to submit to their husbands, journalists Steve and Cokie Roberts raised alarm bells, arguing that this kind of religious rhetoric “can clearly lead to abuse, both physical and emotional.” Others have noted the potential for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam to serve as “roadblocks” for victims when IPV does occur. Sociologist Nancy Nason-Clark and her colleagues have maintained a 25-year research program detailing, in part, the many unique issues facing religious women who are abused, religious men who abuse, and the religious leaders and communities who respond to these individuals.
These same scholars, however, have also documented how religion helps IPV victims and perpetrators. Religion is a “double-edged sword” when it comes to IPV. Indeed, religion provides resources that might discourage IPV in the first place. Scholars of religion and family life often note the “norms, networks, and nomos” religious communities provide that encourage positive family functioning. That is, religious organizations provide messages and understanding about the importance of good marriages and families, and how to achieve them. They surround their adherents with like-minded people who can offer emotional support and accountability should husbands or wives start to deviate from the straight and narrow. And they may engender what psychologist Annette Mahoney and colleagues referred to as the sanctification of marriage, where marriages are imbued with spiritual character and significance. The norms, networks, and nomos associated with religious communities may be especially influential when both partners in the relationship are committed to their religious communities, privy to the same messaging, and embedded in the same social networks (i.e., shared religion has more potential to be protective than individual religion).
Research using nationally-representative samples of U.S. adults generally finds that—within married couples—more religious men are less likely to be perpetrators of IPV, and religious women are marginally less likely to be victims of IPV. Globally, higher religiosity is associated with being less likely to believe that wife beating is acceptable. Religiosity, or religious commitment, seems to be the determining factor, not religious tradition, and it seems that nominal religiosity may present the most risk, with both the nonreligious and the religiously devout being less likely to perpetrate IPV than are those who attend religious services infrequently. For example, sociologist W. Bradford Wilcox has noted that conservative Protestant men in the U.S. who are active in a religious community are among the least likely to physically hurt their spouses, while conservative Protestant men who are not active in a religious community are the most likely to be abusive. Sociologists Christopher Ellison, John Bartkowski, and Kristin Anderson similarly found that perpetration of IPV was lower only among men who attended religious services weekly or more. Evidence from Canada suggests a similar pattern, with those who are infrequent attenders of religious services being the most likely to be abusive.
These studies of religion and IPV are mostly limited to North America, and they make use of data that is now at least 25 years old. Furthermore, they focus on physical abuse, ignoring other aspects of IPV, particularly sexual violence, emotional abuse, and controlling behaviors. Only one of these studies considers religiosity as a couple-level variable—that is, taking into account how shared religious participation is associated with IPV.
Not only has couples’ shared religiosity often been overlooked, but so, too, have beliefs about male headship in the family, despite the fact that this is often what people consider to be the belief used to justify IPV. These beliefs are often inferred (with, we suspect, a healthy dose of measurement error) from measures of religious affiliation. We consider both shared religiosity and beliefs about male headship as correlates of IPV in our 11-country sample, and briefly discuss their role among couples in the U.S. as well.
Religion and Infidelity
Religion’s role in infidelity is not often the subject of public discussion in the U.S., except, perhaps, when it comes to revelations of extramarital affairs among religious leaders. This lack of attention may be due to the fact that there are clear Judeo-Christian proscriptions against cheating on one’s spouse (most prominently, the seventh of the Ten Commandments: “You shall not commit adultery” ), which make proof-texting justifications for infidelity nearly impossible.
Mainstream religious messages about sexual fidelity are very much in step with other mainstream messages. Indeed, the vast majority of people around the world believe infidelity is morally unacceptable, and, at least in the U.S., that number has been growing over time. As marriages have become increasingly about intimacy, infidelity has become increasingly problematic.
Even so, research on religion and infidelity typically finds that higher levels of religiosity are associated with a lower likelihood of cheating on one’s spouse, though that association may not extend to infidelity in nonmarital relationships. Religious norms, networks, and nomos may heighten the importance of fidelity among religious adherents. As with research on religion and IPV, however, most of the research on religion and infidelity is limited to the U.S., and it also focuses on individual—not couple—religiosity. Beliefs about male headship have also not been considered as a source of infidelity. Patriarchal beliefs, however, could be used by some men as a license to cheat on their spouse.
Data and Methods
We use data from the 11-country Global Family and Gender Survey (GFGS) to examine how couples’ religiosity (in terms of their religious commitment) and beliefs about male headship are related to experiences of IPV and infidelity in ongoing married and cohabiting relationships. We examine two measures of IPV based on the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, which includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and controlling behaviors. The first, which we refer to as victimization, is based on responses to four questions:
1. “How often does your partner physically hurt you?”
2. “How often does your partner threaten you with harm?”
3. “How often does your partner force you to have sex?”
4. “How often does your partner withhold money from you?”
We consider those whose partner has never abused them versus those whose partner has rarely, sometimes, fairly often, or frequently abused them.
The second measure of IPV, which we call perpetration, is similar and based on responses to the questions:
1. “How often do you physically hurt your partner?”
2. “How often do you threaten your partner with harm?”
3. “How often do you force your partner to have sex?”
4. “How often do you withhold money from your partner?”
We examine those who never abuse their partner versus those who rarely, sometimes, fairly often, or frequently abuse their partner.
We limit our analysis to women’s victimization and men’s perpetration. We do this to be consistent with prior research, because the conceptual relationship between religion and IPV is gendered, and because—as the WHO puts it—“the overwhelming global burden of IPV is borne by women.”
Respondents who answered “yes” to the question, “Have you ever had sex with someone other than your [spouse/partner] while you were [married/living with your partner]?” are considered to have cheated on their spouse or partner.
Our measure of couple religiosity is consistent with the measure used in the previous essay (see Chapter 2). We adopt their language as well, referring to couples where both respondents are not religious as “shared secular couples;” couples where one partner is highly committed and the other is less so, or where both are only moderately religious, as “less/mixed religious couples;” and couples where both are highly committed as “highly religious couples.”
In Chapter 2, Carroll et al., examined how separate spheres ideology and couple religiosity predict relationship quality; here, we consider how beliefs about male headship in conjunction with couple religiosity predict of IPV and infidelity. The male headship item asked the yes/no question, “Some people believe that the man is head of the family. Others may disagree. Do you believe that the man is head of the family, or not?” We refer to those who believe in male headship as, “patriarchal,” and to those who do not as, “egalitarian.”
We present findings as predicted probabilities, setting all control variables equal to their mean.

We begin by looking at reports of ever having been the victim of IPV at the hands of one’s current partner—either a spouse or cohabiting partner—by the couple’s religious commitment. The figure above reports predicted probabilities that women who are from shared secular couples, less/mixed religious couples, or highly religious couples have ever been victimized by their partner in the 11-country sample. Although women in less/mixed religious couples have a 26% probability of ever having been the victim of violence in their relationship, compared to a 21% probability for women in highly religious couples, and a 23% probability for women in shared secular couples, none of these differences are statistically significant.
The figure below reports predicted probabilities of women’s victimization by couple religiosity and belief about male headship. Popular accounts suggest the idea that wifely submission to husbands provides theological cover for abusive relationships—or at least for men to abuse women. We see little evidence of this here, though. Women in highly religious couples, be they patriarchal or egalitarian, are not statistically different from any other group of women. The only significant difference is that egalitarian women in shared secular relationships are less likely to be victims of IPV (22%) than patriarchal women in less/mixed religious relationships (30%). Headship beliefs themselves (i.e., not in combination with couple religiosity) are not associated with women’s victimization (results not shown).

Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
The figure below reports predicted probabilities of men being a perpetrator of IPV in the global sample by couple religiosity. Findings for perpetration of IPV—whether the respondent has ever abused their current partner—also suggest no influence of couples’ religious characteristics. Men are nearly equally likely to report being perpetrators of IPV across the three categories, with predicted probabilities ranging from 21% to 24%.

When we add beliefs about male headship to the picture in the figure above, there are still no significant differences in men’s likelihood of perpetrating IPV across these groups. The largest gap—between patriarchal men in shared secular couples and egalitarian men in highly religious couples—is not statistically significant. Headship beliefs do not predict IPV perpetration, neither by themselves nor in combination with couple religiosity.
Infidelity

Religious commitment has consistently been found to reduce the incidence of infidelity in the U.S., but little research has been done on this topic outside the U.S. We examined the role of religious commitment in couples from 11 countries in the figure above. Among men, those in less/mixed religious couples have an 18% probability of ever cheating on their spouse or partner, compared to probabilities of 9% for men in shared-secular couples and 11% for men in highly religious couples. Women in highly religious couples are also significantly less likely to have cheated on their partner than their less/mixed counterparts, with probabilities of 6% and 11%, respectively.
We then consider couple religiosity and beliefs about male headship jointly. Egalitarian men in shared secular relationships have the lowest probability of having cheated on their partner at 8%. This is significantly lower than men in less/mixed religious couples, whether egalitarian or patriarchal. Other differences among men, and all the differences among women, are not statistically significant. Headship beliefs by themselves (results not shown) do not predict infidelity among either men or women.
A Note on the United States
The findings from the U.S. indicate no differences in IPV with respect to couple religiosity, but when it comes to women’s infidelity, religious commitment within the couple seems to matter. Women in highly religious couples have just a 2% probability of having cheated on their spouse, compared to a probability of 10% for women in less/mixed religious couples and 13% for women in shared secular couples.
Conclusion
The evidence presented here from 11 countries suggests that highly religious couples, secular couples, and those in between are similar in terms of the violence occurring within their intimate partnerships. These similarities across couples with different levels of religious commitment are notable in light of recent media reports about IPV within religious couples. On one hand, these findings validate the stories: religious couples experience and commit IPV just as nonreligious couples do. Religious participation itself does not safeguard against IPV.
Unfortunately, the resources religious traditions have at their disposal to discourage violence within intimate partnerships may not be tapped very often. The subject of IPV may not be frequently addressed in public religious settings. Congregational religious leaders would do well to change this and to confront the issue head-on in their sermons and programming. A significant minority of their congregants have experienced violence within their marriages and cohabiting unions, and many of them are likely suffering in silence. A significant minority have likely also perpetrated IPV and may pose a continued risk to their families and fellow congregants. Carroll et al.’s essay in this report shows the positive effects religion can have on relationship functioning; if these findings were to be made a point of emphasis, these positive effects might potentially be extended to IPV as well.
At the same time, it is important to note that congregational leaders often do not have the training, skills, or desire to navigate these conversations effectively or to provide appropriate help for those seeking it. Denominational leaders, boards of religious organizations, and others in charge of hiring and overseeing the leaders of local congregations should address this issue in earnest. Victims and perpetrators of IPV often seek help from their clergy, and those clergy need to be ready to handle these situations in ways that not only protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice, but also tend to the spiritual health of all involved. At the very minimum, religious leaders should be knowledgeable about the appropriate authorities or services available to assist them in dealing with dangerous situations. Sadly, many religious leaders remain woefully unprepared to deal with IPV. Their congregants’ safety is at stake, and so, too, is their spiritual well-being.
Even though religion does not insulate people from abusive partnerships, highly religious couples in general are not more violent than other couples. Patriarchal ideas rooted in religious understandings do lead to abusive relationships in some instances, but couples in these relationships do not have elevated rates of IPV compared to other couples. Given the fact that we have measured IPV in ongoing relationships, if religious couples are more likely to remain together after their relationships become violent, we could very well be understating religion’s protective influence on the incidence of IPV. So, while attention to IPV within religious couples is legitimate and important, these settings should also not be considered especially problematic, though IPV among religious couples does present some unique challenges. Violence against intimate partners is found within all types of couples, including religious ones.
With respect to infidelity, patriarchal religious couples also do not stand out from other couples. Across the 11 countries we surveyed, both highly religious and shared secular couples have lower rates of infidelity compared to their less/mixed religious counterparts. In the U.S., there is also a difference between highly religious and shared secular women, with the highly religious being the least likely to cheat. Given the focus of religious institutions (especially in the U.S.) on the importance of reserving sex for marriage, as well as the generally salutary influence of religion on relationships, it is a bit surprising that highly religious couples and shared secular couples behave similarly around the world. But cultural messages about the inappropriateness of extramarital sex are widespread, so secular couples have plenty of motivation to avoid infidelity as well.
Our data suggest religion’s global influence on problematic aspects of relationships—violence against an intimate partner and infidelity—is perhaps more muted than it is for more positive relationship outcomes (Chapter 2). Especially in the case of IPV, these findings should serve as a(nother) wake-up call to religious institutions to take seriously the prevalence of relationship violence in their midst. But they should also serve as a useful corrective to those who might take reports of violence in religious couples to mean that religious couples are more violent than other couples.

El ámbito de estudio de esta pieza de periodismo de investigación de la ABC fue amplio: incluía a comunidades australianas de protestantes, católicos, musulmanes, judíos, hindúes y sijs.
Esta preocupación sobre la VGP en las parejas religiosas no es nueva. En 1998, después de que la Convención Bautista del Sur emitiera un comunicado en el que conminaba a las mujeres a someterse a sus maridos, los periodistas Steve y Cokie Roberts dieron la voz de alarma, argumentando que este tipo de retórica religiosa “podía claramente llevar al abuso, tanto físico como psicológico”. Otros han señalado el potencial del cristianismo, el judaísmo y el islam para actuar como “barreras” para las víctimas cuando tiene lugar la VGP. La socióloga Nancy Nason-Clark y sus compañeros han emitido durante veinticinco años un programa de investigación en el que detallaban, en parte, numerosos asuntos idiosincráticos a los que se enfrentan las mujeres religiosas que sufren abusos, los hombres religiosos que los cometen y las comunidades y líderes religiosos ante los que estos individuos responden.
Los mismos expertos, sin embargo, también han documentado cómo la religión ayuda a las víctimas de VGP y a quienes la cometen. La religión es “un arma de doble filo” en lo que se refiere a la VGP , toda vez que proporciona recursos que, de entrada, pueden disuadir a los perpetradores de VGP. Expertos en religión y en vida familiar han señalado a menudo las “normas, redes de contactos y nomos” provistos por las comunidades religiosas que fomentan un funcionamiento positivo de la familia. Es decir, las organizaciones religiosas proporcionan mensajes y comprensión sobre la importancia que tienen un buen matrimonio y una familia igualmente buena, y sobre cómo lograrlos. Estas organizaciones rodean a sus adeptos de personas con creencias similares que pueden ofrecerles apoyo emocional y ayudarles a exigir responsabilidades en el caso de que sus maridos o mujeres empezaran a desviarse del camino correcto. Y pueden generar lo que la psicóloga Annette Mahoney y sus colegas han denominado “santificación del matrimonio”, a partir de la cual los matrimonios se empapan de un significado e identidad espirituales. Las normas, contactos y nomos asociados a las comunidades religiosas pueden ser especialmente influyentes cuando ambos miembros de la pareja están comprometidos con sus comunidades religiosas, reciben los mismos mensajes y están integrados en los mismos círculos sociales (según esto, las parejas que comparten una religión pueden gozar de un nivel de protección mayor que aquellas en las que uno de los miembros la vive de manera individual).
Una investigación con muestras representativas de adultos estadounidenses a nivel nacional revela que, en las parejas casadas, los hombres más religiosos son menos propensos a ejercer la VGP, y que las mujeres religiosas tienen menos probabilidades de ser víctimas de la VGP. A nivel mundial, una religiosidad más alta se asocia con una menor tendencia a considerar que pegar a la propia esposa sea aceptable. La religiosidad, o el compromiso religioso (y no la tradición religiosa), parece ser el factor determinante, y tanto los no religiosos como los devotos tienen una menor probabilidad de perpetrar VGP que aquellos que acuden a servicios religiosos con poca frecuencia. Por ejemplo, el sociólogo W. Bradford Wilcox ha observado que, en Estados Unidos, los hombres protestantes conservadores que participan activamente en una comunidad religiosa son uno de los grupos con menor probabilidad de hacer daño físico a sus esposas, mientras que los hombres protestantes que no son activos en dichas comunidades son los que más probabilidades tienen de maltratarlas. En esta línea, los sociólogos Christopher Ellison, John Bartkowski y Kristin Anderson constataron que el índice de VGP era más bajo únicamente entre aquellos hombres que acudían a servicios religiosos una o más veces a la semana. Los datos de Canadá indican un patrón similar, en el que aquellos hombres que acuden a dichos servicios con poca frecuencia son los que mayor probabilidad tienen de ser maltratadores.
Estos estudios sobre la religión y la VGP están limitados, en su mayor parte, a Norteamérica, y utilizan datos recogidos hace al menos 25 años. Además, se centran en el abuso físico, sin prestar atención a otras formas de VGP, particularmente la violencia sexual, el maltrato psicológico y las conductas controladoras. Solo uno de esos estudios considera la religión como una variable a nivel pareja (es decir, teniendo en cuenta la asociación entre la participación religiosa compartida y la VGP).
No solo es que la religiosidad compartida de las parejas haya sido a menudo dejada de lado en estos estudios: también lo han sido las creencias acerca del hombre como cabeza de familia, a pesar de que es esta la que popularmente se considera como la que justifica la VGP. Estas creencias se han inferido a menudo (sospechamos que con un considerable grado de error en su medición) a partir de medidas de afiliación religiosa. En nuestra muestra de once países, estudiamos la religiosidad compartida y las creencias acerca el hombre como cabeza de familia en correlación con la VGP y discutimos brevemente su papel en las parejas estadounidenses.
Religión e infidelidad
El papel de la religión en la infidelidad no suele ser objeto de discusión pública en Estados Unidos, exceptuando, quizá, lo referente a las revelaciones de relaciones extramatrimoniales por parte de los líderes religiosos. Esta falta de atención puede deberse al hecho de que existen claras prohibiciones judeocristianas sobre engañar al cónyuge (sobre todo, en el séptimo de los Diez Mandamientos: “No cometerás adulterio” ), lo que hace que sea prácticamente imposible alegar una justificación textual de la infidelidad en esta doctrina.
Los mensajes religiosos generalizados acerca de la fidelidad sexual están muy en consonancia con otros mensajes comunes. Así, la inmensa mayoría de las personas de todo el mundo considera que la infidelidad es moralmente inaceptable. Y, al menos en Estados Unidos, el número de quienes piensan así ha aumentado con el tiempo. Dado que los matrimonios se basan cada vez más en la intimidad, la infidelidad se ha vuelto cada vez más cuestionada.
A pesar de ello, las investigaciones en materia de religión e infidelidad suelen apuntar a que un mayor nivel de religiosidad está asociado con una menor tendencia a engañar al cónyuge, aunque es posible que dicha asociación no pueda extrapolarse a las parejas que no están casadas. Las normas, contactos y nomos religiosos pueden elevar la importancia de la fidelidad entre quienes se adhieren a una religión. Sin embargo, tal como ocurre con las investigaciones sobre la relación entre religiosidad y VGP, la mayor parte de los estudios se limitan a Estados Unidos y se centran en la religiosidad individual, y no en pareja. Tampoco se ha estudiado la relación entre la infidelidad y las creencias acerca del hombre como cabeza de familia. No obstante, algunos hombres podrían considerar las creencias patriarcales como una licencia para engañar a sus esposas.
Datos y métodos
Hemos utilizado los datos de la Encuesta Mundial sobre Familia y Género (Global Family and Gender Survey [GFGS]) para examinar cómo la religiosidad de las parejas (en lo relativo a su compromiso religioso) y sus creencias acerca del papel del hombre como cabeza de familia se relacionan con experiencias de VGP e infidelidad en matrimonios y parejas cuyos miembros cohabitan. A partir de ellos, examinamos dos mediciones de la VGP basándonos en la definición que de ella hace la OMS, que incluye el maltrato físico, la violencia sexual o psicológica y las conductas controladoras. La primera de las mediciones, a la que en adelante denominaremos “abuso”, se basa en las respuestas a estas cuatro preguntas:
1. ¿Con qué frecuencia le hace daño físicamente su pareja?
2. ¿Con qué frecuencia la amenaza su pareja con agredirla físicamente?
3. ¿Con qué frecuencia la obliga su pareja a tener relaciones sexuales?
4. ¿Con qué frecuencia le quita dinero su pareja?
Hemos considerado a aquellos cuya pareja nunca ha abusado de ellos en contraposición a aquellos cuya pareja ha abusado de ellos, ya sea excepcionalmente, alguna vez, con relativa frecuencia o a menudo.
La segunda medición de la VGP, que llamaremos “perpetración”, es similar y se basa en las respuestas a estas preguntas:
1. ¿Con qué frecuencia agrede físicamente a su pareja?
2. ¿Con qué frecuencia la amenaza con agredirla?
3. ¿Con qué frecuencia la obliga a mantener relaciones sexuales con usted?
4. ¿Con qué frecuencia le quita dinero?
Hemos considerado a aquellos que nunca han abusado de su pareja en contraposición a los que sí lo han hecho, ya sea excepcionalmente, alguna vez, con relativa frecuencia o a menudo.
Hemos limitado nuestro análisis al abuso sobre mujeres y la perpetración por parte de hombres. Lo hemos hecho así para ser coherentes con las investigaciones pretéritas, ya que la relación conceptual entre la religión y la VGP tiene género. Y también porque, tal como señala la OMS, “la abrumadora carga mundial de la VGP la llevan las mujeres”.
Consideramos que los encuestados que respondieron “sí” a la pregunta “¿Ha tenido relaciones alguna vez con alguien que no fuera su cónyuge mientras estaba casado/cohabitando?” han sido infieles a sus parejas.
Nuestra medición de la religiosidad en pareja es coherente con la medición utilizada en el ensayo previo (véase el capítulo 2). Hemos adoptado también su terminología, refiriéndonos a las parejas en las que ningún miembro es religioso como “parejas seculares”; a aquellas en las que un miembro es muy religioso y el otro menos, así como a aquellas en las que ambos son moderadamente religiosos, como “parejas algo religiosas o mixtas”; y a las parejas en las que ambos miembros son muy religiosos como “parejas muy religiosas”.
En el capítulo 2, Carroll et al. examinaron de qué forma las esferas de perspectivas distintas y la religiosidad de la pareja pueden predecir la calidad de las relaciones. En el presente capítulo consideramos de qué modo las creencias sobre el hombre como cabeza de familia en yuxtaposición a la religiosidad en pareja pueden predecir la VGP y la infidelidad. La pregunta principal para medir si los encuestados consideran al hombre como cabeza de familia es la siguiente: “Algunas personas creen que el hombre es el cabeza de familia. Otras no están de acuerdo. ¿Cree usted que el hombre es el cabeza de familia?”. Nos referimos a aquellos que contestaron “sí” como “patriarcales” y a quienes contestaron “no” como “equitativos”.
Presentamos nuestros hallazgos como las probabilidades previsibles, ajustando todas las variables de control al valor de la media de cada una de ellas.
Resultados de la encuesta en once países

Comenzamos analizando los datos de aquellas encuestadas que declararon haber sido víctimas de VGP alguna vez por parte de su actual compañero (ya sea su marido o la pareja con la que cohabita) en función del grado de religiosidad de la pareja. La figura superior muestra la probabilidad de que las mujeres que mantienen una relación (ya sea en parejas seculares, parejas algo religiosas o mixtas, o parejas muy religiosas) hayan sufrido abuso por parte de sus parejas en los once países que abarca la muestra. Aunque las mujeres en parejas algo religiosas o mixtas tienen un 26% de probabilidades de haber sido víctimas de abuso en su relación; las de parejas muy religiosas, un 21%; y las de parejas seculares, un 23%, ninguna de estas diferencias es estadísticamente significativa.
La siguiente figura muestra la probabilidad de que una mujer en pareja muy religiosa y que cree que el hombre es el cabeza de familia sea víctima de abuso. La creencia popular sugiere la idea que la sumisión de las mujeres a sus maridos proporciona una cobertura teológica que justifica las relaciones abusivas, o al menos que los hombres abusen de las mujeres. Sin embargo, nuestro estudio no muestra evidencias de ello. Las mujeres en parejas muy religiosas, ya sean patriarcales o equitativas, no muestran estadísticas diferentes a las de cualquier otro grupo de mujeres. La única diferencia significativa es que las mujeres equitativas en relaciones seculares tienen una menor probabilidad de ser víctimas de VGP (22%) que las mujeres patriarcales en parejas algo religiosas o mixtas (30%). Por sí mismas, las creencias sobre los cabeza de familia (es decir, las que no tienen en cuenta el grado de religiosidad) no arrojan diferencias en lo que respecta al abuso a las mujeres (los resultados de esta cuestión no se muestran en este ensayo).

Perpetradores de violencia de género en la pareja
La siguiente figura muestra la probabilidad, a partir de nuestra muestra mundial, de que los hombres sean perpetradores de VGP en función del grado de religiosidad de la pareja. Nuestras averiguaciones sobre la perpetración de la VGP (es decir, si el encuestado ha abusado alguna vez de su pareja actual) sugieren, asimismo, que la religiosidad de la pareja no es influyente. Las probabilidad de que un hombre sea perpetrador de VGP es prácticamente la misma en las tres categorías, con índices entre el 21 y el 24%.

Cuando añadimos a la ecuación las creencias sobre el hombre como cabeza de familia, las probabilidades de que un hombre sea perpetrador de VGP siguen sin presentar diferencias significativas entre las tres categorías, tal como muestra la figura anterior. La mayor distancia se registra entre los hombres patriarcales en parejas seculares y los hombres equitativos en parejas muy religiosas, pero no es estadísticamente significativa. Las creencias del hombre como cabeza de familia no repercuten en una mayor probabilidad de que los hombres perpetren VGP, ni por sí mismas ni atendiendo a la religiosidad de la pareja.
Infidelidad

Existen datos consistentes que indican que el compromiso religioso reduce la incidencia de la infidelidad en Estados Unidos, pero la investigación realizada sobre esta relación fuera de este país es escasa. En la figura anterior, nuestro estudio examina el rol del compromiso religioso en parejas de once países. En el caso de los hombres, aquellos que se encuentran en una pareja algo religiosa o mixta tienen un 18% de probabilidades de haber engañado alguna vez a su esposa o compañera sentimental. Dicha probabilidad es del 9% en el caso de los hombres en parejas seculares y del 11% en aquellos en parejas muy religiosas. Las mujeres en parejas muy religiosas tienen una probabilidad sensiblemente inferior de haber sido infieles a su pareja que sus homólogas en parejas algo religiosas o mixtas: un 6% frente a un 11%, respectivamente.

Consideramos conjuntamente aquí la religiosidad de la pareja y sus creencias sobre el hombre como cabeza de familia. Los hombres equitativos en parejas seculares son los que menor probabilidad tienen de haber sido infieles, con un índice del 8%. Dicho índice es sensiblemente menor a la de aquellos en parejas algo religiosas o mixtas, ya sean equitativos o patriarcales. El resto de las diferencias entre los hombres, así como las existentes entre las distintas categorías de mujeres, no son estadísticamente significativas. La consideración del hombre como cabeza de familia no repercute en el grado de infidelidad ni entre los hombres ni entre las mujeres.
Nota sobre los resultados en Estados Unidos
Los resultados de la muestra en Estados Unidos señalan que la religiosidad de la pareja no incide en la probabilidad de perpetrar o sufrir VGP, pero en lo que respecta a la fidelidad de las mujeres, el compromiso religioso en la pareja sí parece tener peso. Las mujeres en parejas muy religiosas tienen solo un 2% de probabilidades de haber sido infieles alguna vez, mientras que este índice es del 10% en el caso de las mujeres en parejas algo religiosas o mixtas y del 13%.en aquellas en parejas seculares.
Conclusiones
La evidencia recogida a partir de nuestra muestra sobre once países sugiere que la probabilidad de que exista VGP es similar en las parejas muy religiosas, las seculares y aquellas en un punto intermedio. Es pertinente señalar estas similitudes entre parejas con diferente grado de religiosidad en un contexto en el que algunos medios han referido la incidencia de la VGP en las parejas religiosas. Por un lado, nuestros hallazgos confirman estos hechos: las parejas religiosas sufren y perpetran VGP en la misma medida en la que lo hacen las parejas no religiosas. La participación religiosa, por sí misma, no constituye una salvaguardia frente a la VGP.
Desafortunadamente, los recursos que las tradiciones religiosas tienen a su disposición para disuadir de ejercer la violencia en las relaciones de pareja puede que no se aprovechen muy a menudo. Y el tema de la VGP tampoco se trata asiduamente en los contextos religiosos públicos. En ese sentido, sería positivo que los líderes de las congregaciones religiosas intentaran revertir esta situación y abordaran abiertamente esta cuestión en sus sermones y programas. Una minoría significativa de sus adeptas ha experimentado violencia en sus matrimonios o en sus relaciones de cohabitación en pareja, y es posible que muchas estén sufriendo en silencio. Del mismo modo, es probable que una minoría igualmente significativa haya perpetrado VGP y constituya un riesgo continuo para sus familias y compañeros feligreses. El ensayo de Carroll et al. en este informe muestra los efectos positivos que la religión puede ejercer en el funcionamiento de las relaciones. Si se enfatizaran los resultados de estos hallazgos, dichos efectos positivos podrían extenderse también a la VGP.
Al mismo tiempo, es importante señalar que los líderes de las congregaciones rara vez tienen la formación, las habilidades o el deseo de abordar estas conversaciones de manera efectiva o de proporcionar la ayuda apropiada a quienes la buscan. Los líderes confesionales, las juntas de las organizaciones religiosas y el resto de personas al cargo de reclutar y supervisar a los líderes de las congregaciones locales deberían abordar este asunto con rigor. Tanto las víctimas como los perpetradores de VGP a menudo buscan ayuda en su clérigo, y estos han de estar preparados para manejar esas situaciones de tal forma que protejan a las víctimas y lleven a los perpetradores ante la justicia, procurando, además, salud espiritual a todos los implicados. Como mínimo, los líderes religiosos deberían estar informados sobre cuáles son las autoridades a las que deben dirigirse y sobre los servicios de asistencia disponibles para hacer frente a situaciones peligrosas. Lamentablemente, muchos líderes religiosos siguen sin estar preparados para enfrentarse a la VGP. La seguridad de sus feligreses está en peligro, así como su bienestar espiritual.
A pesar de que la religión no es una burbuja que pueda proteger de las relaciones abusivas, por lo general las parejas muy religiosas no son más violentas que el resto. Las ideas patriarcales ligadas a algunas interpretaciones de la religión pueden llevar a relaciones abusivas en determinadas circunstancias, pero el índice de VGP en esas parejas no es más alto que en el resto. Dado que hemos medido la VGP en relaciones en curso, en el caso de que las parejas religiosas tengan una mayor tendencia a seguir juntas cuando su relación se haya vuelto violenta, podríamos estar infravalorando la influencia protectora de la religión en la incidencia de la VGP. Así que, si bien es importante y legítimo prestar atención a la incidencia de la VGP en las parejas religiosas, dicha condición no debería considerarse especialmente problemática, pese a que la VGP en las parejas religiosas presenta algunos retos únicos. La violencia contra el compañero sentimental tiene incidencia en todos los tipos de parejas, incluidas las religiosas.
En lo que respecta a la infidelidad, las parejas religiosas patriarcales tampoco destacan sobre el resto. En los once países en los que hemos realizado las encuestas, tanto las parejas muy religiosas como las seculares tienen un menor índice de infidelidad que las parejas algo religiosas o mixtas. En Estados Unidos, también existen diferencias entre las mujeres muy religiosas y las seculares, ya que las primeras son las que menor probabilidad tienen de ser infieles. Dada la importancia que las instituciones religiosas (especialmente en el citado país) otorgan al hecho de que el sexo solo esté presente en el matrimonio, y dada la generalmente saludable influencia de la religión en las relaciones, resulta relativamente sorprendente que las parejas muy religiosas y las seculares tengan un comportamiento similar a nivel mundial. Pero los mensajes culturales sobre la impropiedad del sexo extramarital están generalizados, de tal modo que las parejas seculares tienen también una gran motivación para evitar la infidelidad.
Nuestros datos sugieren que la influencia global de la religión sobre determinados aspectos problemáticos de las relaciones está quizá más silenciada que su influencia positiva sobre estas (véase el capítulo 2). En el caso de la VGP, especialmente, los resultados deberían servir como una llamada de atención a las autoridades religiosas para que se tomen en serio la incidencia de la violencia en las relaciones entre sus fieles. Pero también tendrían que servir como correctivo para quienes utilizan los datos sobre la violencia en las parejas religiosas para argumentar que esta es más frecuente en estas parejas que en las demás.
Claves:

Madrid es el epicentro de la investigación, la innovación y la tecnología en España.
• Madrid representa el 26% del gasto en I+D en España y el 23% del personal relacionado con investigación (INE, Estadística de actividades de I+D).
Madrid ofrece las condiciones ideales para el desarrollo de tecnología e innovación:
• Recursos humanos: cerca de 230.000 estudiantes universitarios, el 17% de los universitarios españoles (Ministerio de Educación Cultura y Deporte, Estadísticas universitarias).
• Grandes empresas: sobre todo en sectores intensivos en I+D. El 31% de las empresas españolas de más de 200 empleados está en Madrid (INE, DIRCE).
• Mercado de consumo: la gran ciudad española con mayor renta disponible. Hogares y empresas demandan soluciones de primer nivel (INE).
El área funcional de Madrid es la mayor del Sur de Europa, con cerca de 7,5 millones de habitantes (Según Urban Audit). En Europa, sólo la superan Londres, París, Moscú y el Rurh (Dortmund, Essen, Bochum).
Sector aeroespacial
En Madrid y su área metropolitana se concentra una parte enorme del sector aeroespacial de España:
• El 62% del sector aeronáutico y el 95% del sector espacial de toda España (Madrid Aerospace Cluster).
El sector aeroespacial pivota sobre empresas clave de gran capacidad de arrastre para diferentes proveedores: ensamblaje, materiales, motores, comunicaciones, control, simulación, satélites, mantenimiento, etc. El gigante europeo Airbus tiene plantas en el área de Madrid que participan en la construcción de aviones tanto civiles (como el A350) como militares (por ejemplo, el Eurofighter). Esto proporciona un gran impulso a la industria aeroespacial en la ciudad.
De esta gran diversidad, en Madrid se pueden encontrar en Madrid socios para casi todos los nichos del sector aeroespacial y en todas las facetas de la actividad: investigación, producción, comercialización.
También es importante la presencia del sector público, con centros de investigación como el Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Aeroespacial, INTA, con gran actividad en campos como los vehículos no tripulados (UAVs); o el IMDEA Materiales.
Sector de telecomunicaciones
Las principales empresas globales de telecomunicaciones están en la capital y su entorno. Esto ha creado una sociedad digital de primer orden:
• El 85% de los hogares tienen algún tipo de ordenador.
• El 88,3% acceso a internet.
• La penetración móvil es del 98,6% de los habitantes.

Giorgio Armani will stage his next Emporio runway show, right beside a real airplane runway. His next catwalk event, on September 20, will be held inside the hangar of Milan’s Linate Airport, the Italian designer revealed Friday.
Armani has named the show Emporio Armani Boarding, the first time the airport will host a fashion show, in this case Emporio Armani Spring/Summer 2019 Men’s and Women’s collections. Unusually for the designer, Armani has combined his men’s and women’s Emporio collections in a joint show, which will climax with a live performance by a yet-to-be-disclosed international pop star.
In a democratic move, the audience of 2,300 will include a number of members of the public, in among the editors and VIPs. Tickets for the public will be available via a special contest, held throughout the city of Milan, using a game-like format. The first one hundred randomly selected names will be given special “passports” allowing them to attend the show accompanied by a guest.
“Airports are places full of symbolism. They suggest unbounded openness to the world outside. You take off to discover and learn, or come back after experiencing countless adventures,” said Armani in a release.
The hangar has been emblazoned with a giant Emporio logo since 1996, – seven years after the collection’s founding – making it a famous visual signature seen by pretty well all visitors landing in the Italian fashion capital.
“It’s an image that welcomes the thousands of travellers who land at Linate Airport or functions as a farewell as they depart from Milan. The airport is the perfect space for Emporio Armani, the brand that embodies a free, Armani Group they depart from Milan. To thine own self be true, Shakespeare writes in Hamlet, and, half way through the New York current New York catwalk season, designers are certainly heeding the Immortal Bard’s advice.
Creators here in American have concentrated on respecting their own private DNA, and going back to the roots of their brand and the result is one of the strongest seasons in many years. And while the weather has been muggy, dank and wet, the clothes are generally hyper bright and colorful, in a season where multi-ethnic casts were the rule.
Kate Spade
Being faithful to one’s origins has been true about long-standing brands or fledgling fashion houses. A good example being Kate Spade, where the house staged its first collection since the tragic death of the founder last June. The show, held inside the New York Public Library, also marked the debut of new creative director Nicola
Glass, who succeeded Deborah Lloyd. Composed of a series of charming, candy-colored prints, and coherent forgiving silhouettes, all softly illuminated by film lighting balloons. The show’s leitmotif was the light-handed use of Kate Spade’s noted spade-shaped logo, seen in perfectly judged summer frocks; fluid silk dresses or mid-thigh skirts and a marvelous Alpine prairie flower trench coat. When Glass did finally send out a mono-color look it was a sensational deep lilac silk wrap dress with matching skullcap, boots and logo clutch worn by a black model.
Pre-show, Glass explained to editors that she was struck in the wake of the founder’s death by how much nostalgia there was for the brand. So, she wanted to focus on the house’s foundations and color scheme, though carefully avoiding any sense of vintage. Contemporary clothes for busy modern women, or the Neighborhood Girls heard about in the main song in the show’s soundtrack, Suzanne Vega.
Rodarte
New York Fashion Week really needed a fashion moment, and in a drenched cemetery in the Lower East Side it got one in a brilliant show by Los Angeles-based fashion house Rodarte.
Staged in the NYC Marble Cemetery, a little-known yet beautiful verdant space, with early 19th century tombs, headstones, vaults and plinths. Adding to the atmosphere, the rain fell steadily throughout, as the cast marched solemnly in semi-transparent, multi-layered fantasy dresses; or gravity defying, mega-ruffled metallic leather gowns; or dense yards of puckered chiffon. Many finished with Spanish lace mantillas, decorated with scores of
fabric flowers or real roses.
Ethereal eccentricity or dark beauty rarely has the genius of the house’s founders and rarely has the work of design duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy seemed more beautiful.
Jonathan Cohen
The latest new downtown designer favorite in Manhattan is Jonathan Cohen, a creator born in San Diego to Mexican parents, who is a finalist in this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award.
Blessed with a subtle eye, a gift for the theatrical and a love of performance art, Cohen staged a rather brilliant wee fashion show Thursday evening in downtown gallery on the Bowery.
Barely a hundreds souls packed into the raw space, as a short, intense downpour descended outside on another draining day in New York. Inside, a marvelous string quartet called Sterling Strings, made up of four black professionally trained classical musicians played dramatic versions of famous pop and rock songs, as a cast of some 15 models paraded about.
“I was inspired by four of my favorite musicians and bands: The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Lauryn Hill and Kate Bush,” explained the lightly bearded Cohen, who even printed lyrics from his musical heroes on dirndl skirts and frocks. Cohen develops his own fabrics – notable in some marvelous blotch petal silk dresses; and also showed clever gray chalk stripe mannish blazers and some marvelous shirt dresses, weekend looks for an Indie musician at
ease. Cohen staying true to his aesthetic concept, like all the best designers in Manhattan this season.
And, to complete Polonius’ famous quote from Hamlet:

KATE SPADE

Lo vimos en acertados vestidos de verano, muchos de ellos fluidos y de seda, en faldas a medio muslo y en una maravillosa gabardina estampada con flores de la pradera alpina. Como cierre, Glass sacó a la pasarela un sensacional vestido cruzado de seda monocolor en lila intenso con la característica kipá (o gorro judío) a juego y rematado por botas y un bolso rígido con el logo de la marca, lucido por una modelo de raza negra.
Antes del desfile, Glass explicó a los periodistas que estaba profundamente impactada por la nostalgia que muerte de la fundadora de la firma ha despertado, por lo que decidió centrar su colección en los orígenes de la casa, respetando su paleta de colores, pero intentando evitar al mismo tiempo cualquier atisbo vintage. Prendas contemporáneas para la ocupada mujer moderna al son del Neighbourhood Girls de Suzanne Vega, principal tema
del desfile.
RODARTE
La Semana de la Moda de Nueva York pedía a gritos un momento fashion, y lo tuvo en el espectacular desfile de Rodarte, celebrado en el Cementerio de Mármol de Nueva York, situado en el Lower East Side. Este precioso (y poco conocido) espacio verde, lleno de tumbas, lápidas, bóvedas y pedestales, ofrecía una atmósfera única, a lo que se añadió una lluvia incesante mientras las modelos caminaban solemnemente en fantasiosos vestidos transparentes de múltiples capas, vestidos de cuero metálico con maxivolantes que desafiaban la ley de la gravedad y densos retales de chifón. Muchos de los looks iban rematados por la típica mantilla española de encaje, decorada con flores de tela y rosas naturales. Una manifestación de la genialidad de Kate y Laura Mulleavy, cuya excéntrica etereidad y su tamiz único para la belleza más oscura jamás habían sido tan hermosos.
JONATHAN COHEN
El último descubrimiento entre los diseñadores de la Gran Manzana es Jonathan Cohen. De ascendencia mexicana y nacido en San Diego, el creador es finalista este año del premio Who’s On Next que otorga la revista Vogue. De estilo teatral pero sutil y con excepcionales dotes para el arte performativo, Cohen ofreció un brillante desfile el
pasado jueves en una galería de la céntrica calle Bowery. Lastrado por otro intenso día de lluvia en Nueva York, el desfile apenas consiguió reunir a unos centenares de asistentes, a quienes el maravilloso cuarteto de cuerda Sterling Strings deleitó con sus versiones de clásicos del pop y el rock mientras un casting de quince modelos se pavoneaba sobre la pasarela.
“Me he inspirado en mis músicos y bandas favoritos: The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Lauryn Hill y Kate Bush”, explicaba Cohen, que incluso imprimió las letras de los temas de sus ídolos musicales en faldas y vestidos dirndl del folclore alemán.
Cohen desarrolla sus propios tejidos, notorios en maravillosos vestidos salpicados de pétalos de seda. Challenge
Chorus is New Zealand’s largest telecommunications infrastructure company. They maintain and build a network predominantly made up of local telephone exchanges, cabinets and copper and fibre cables. Approximately 1.8 million lines are connected to homes and businesses throughout the country.
Prior to joining beforeUdig Chorus understood that they were having too many third party damages to their network, in fact their internal analysis of damages concluded that for every Plant enquiry that they did not receive that 1 in 5 would result in damage to their network.
Action
BeforeUdig was introduced as part of Chorus’ asset protection strategy. The key reasons was to leverage enquiries form the service to increase their ability to make contractors aware of the location of their network.
Contractors can access beforeUdig via traditional methods of phone and fax during normal business hours but it’s the ability to access it via the web, 24 hours and seven days per week, that really excited the Chorus business.
As support for the service increases across the utility providers, the contractor no longer has to guess as to who may have underground assets in
and around their proposed dig site; no longer does he have to sit on the phone or chase around trying to get plans and order locate services and best of all he no longer has to do this during his normal work time, thus increasing his productivity and workplace efficiencies.
The Chorus decision was made easier following the 2007/08 financial year where they recorded more than 2000 damage incidents to their network resulting in excess of £1.6 million dollars in repairs alone.
Outcome
In the first year of joining the BeforeUdig service in New Zealand, Chorus saw a 30% decline in the number of incidents involving third party damage to their network in Auckland alone.
The number of dig site enquiries continues to grow across the service with around 25000 on average each month. The service itself currently has over 20000 users and this is increasing by 1000 new users every month.
Chorus will continue to invest in this asset protection strategy as they strive to reduce damages to their own network, but also to ensure that businesses are not affected by disruption caused by third party interference but also the potential impact on the public unable to make an emergency call because a cable has been cut.

(HPR)** was introduced to deliver the Plan Response Service for all ENW related asset/plant enquiries. Users place their enquiries via the LSBUD service which results in a request being sent automatically to the PR service.
Once the enquiry has been received by the ENW HPR service it is fed through their set of automated business rules and a response is automatically created.
The HPR service is used to record, assess, and archive all plan requests before providing a fast, accurate and clear response to the enquirer.
This service allows the contractors carrying out essential works to request their safe digging plans online and receive them by email from the latest most accurate and up-to date GIS dataset
provided by ENW.
Joining LSBUD and using the HPR service enables better Access to critical business asset information.
The ability for the HPR service to automate the enquiry response process has seen significant benefits realised. ENW have found they can more effectively promote safety, have increased their
asset protection and dramatically reduced the manual intervention required.
The service currently delivers over 20,000 individual requests each month to the end user. All of this is fully automated and the response times for each enquiry are now taking just a few minutes each.

I still remember the moment when the email arrived. I had just been awarded a scholarship, which, for me, meant realizing my dream of attending IESE. Without it, I would not be here today. And that means I would not be who I am; a better version of the person I was two years ago.
It’s difficult to describe in words the extent to which the IESE MBA has shaped me. “I was considering several different schools for my MBA, but after a campus visit, I knew IESE was where I wanted to be. Neither my wife nor I ever thought of Barcelona as a city where we would like to live for more than a couple of years, but then we learned to love it. Two years ago, I never would have thought that I would be excited to join an insurance company, but that has also changed. In many ways, this journey was about staying focused while at the same time staying open to what life has to offer.
It wasn’t an easy journey. There were days when I felt sick but had to take an exam, days with never-ending lists of academic deliverables, days when my daughter was ill and my wife had to balance work and childcare, which made me feel guilty for not being able to help. There were days with multiple rejection letters and failed interviews, days when I questioned why on Earth I decided to leave a decent job back home.

Nineteen months ago, I was asked whether I was ready for a life-changing experience. Now, I can’t think of a better adjective to describe my experience at IESE.
I came to Barcelona with the objective of changing industries and finding a job where I could have a real impact on the people around me. Before my MBA, I was working at an infrastructure company and became interested in sectors that had a more direct connection with the end consumer. I wanted to try new things without leaving the finance world, as was surprised about the broad scope and diversity of opportunities available by simply forming part of the IESE community.
I had the chance to live an extraordinary international work experience by doing a summer internship in PepsiCo in Geneva. After graduation, I will be joining Novartis, whose orientation toward improving people’s lives I greatly admire.
On top of all these amazing work opportunities, I would like to mention the personal aspect of my MBA experience. I have made life-long lasting friends during the MBA and will also be getting married soon after graduation, which would have never been possible if I hadn’t moved to Barcelona. If anyone asks me what my MBA IESE has meant to me, I would say that it has set me on a new life pathway.

To all the people who made my scholarship possible, I would like to briefly address what your generosity has meant for me. Before the MBA, my professional and educational experience had been UK-centric. Besides a brief, four-month foray in China to study Mandarin, my experience was virtually all UK-focused around London and the financial services industry. The MBA case method opened my eyes to the functioning of hundreds of different industries and expanded my mindset to find common techniques that could be applied across them.
I feel as though I have learned decades of business experience in less than two years. Beyond that, the MBA has enabled me to gain professional experience in Spanish through work in both Argentina and Peru in the B2B start-up and venture capital space.
If you had told me when I was accepted into IESE’s MBA that I would work in two Latin American countries and live on two new continents in the span of a year, I would have simply laughed it away. My mind has been broadened and enhanced by the insights of those around me. Today, I feel prepared to work in Spanish in an industry different from the one I left before my MBA.
This scholarship has left me free of student debt and in a position to turn down MBA employment opportunities to follow an entrepreneurial path. An MBA classmate and I have launched a property technology venture builder, AL Ventures, to bring the latest construction and property management technologies from Northern Europe and North America to Spain and Southern Europe. By spreading technology across borders, we hope to transform opportunities for ordinary people.
Eventually, I hope to use my experience to enter into politics in the United Kingdom as a way of “paying it forward” to the millions in my country who do not have the opportunities available to me and my classmates.

»Tomé en consideración varias escuelas en las que cursar mi MBA, y fue al visitar el campus cuando supe que quería estudiar en IESE. Ni mi mujer ni yo habíamos pensado vivir durante más de dos años en una ciudad como Barcelona, pero luego aprendimos a amarla.
