OF WATER SAMPLES
Learning objectives:
1. Students will be able to qualitatively determine the pH of a solution by observing the color change of different water samplesby employing the pH indicator.
2. Students will be able to explain, using scientific terms, what makes a solutionacidic or basic.
Experimental Procedure:
In this experiment, students will test the pH of different solutions using a universal indicator and a purple cabbage juice indicator. The purple cabbage juice indicator can be prepared using the following directions.
Purple Cabbage Juice Indicator (from Ref 2):
1. Chop one red cabbage into small pieces. Place 2-3 cups of chopped cabbage in a saucepan and cover with water.
2. The solution is brought to a boil, and then the heat is turned off. The solution should sit for about 30 minutes to cool.
3. The cabbage water is poured through a strainer into a jar or large measuring cup. The dark purple liquid in the jar is the pH indicator liquid.

Waste disposal:
Allwaste generated during the experiment can be disposed using the normal water-based waste disposal method as the waste does not contain any toxic elements.
Teaching notes:
• Can use any water source (e.g., lake, tap, carbonated drink, aquarium, etc.). It’s recommended to have an example from acidic, neutral and alkaline solutions.
• Purple cabbage juice indicator can be prepared following the steps above.
• This work can be conducted using the microwell (Figure 1) as a microscale chemistry set-up or using small beakers for a normal conventional set up.
Safety:
• Students and demonstrators are advised to wear a lab coat, goggles, and gloves while performing the experiment.
• If any acidic solution, basic solution, or pH indicator spills on a student’s hand or other body part, wash thoroughly with running water.

Lab Materials:
Apparatus
• Well plate
• thin stemmed plastic pipette
• microspatula
• filter paper
Chemicals
• 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution
• 0.1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution
• tap water
• other water samples
• carbonated drink
• universal indicator
• purple cabbage juice
Lab procedure:
1. Dispense the following solutions into the wells of your microwell plate as stated below:
A1: 10 dropsof 0.1 M HCl B1: 10 drops of 0.1 M HCl C1: 10 dropsofcarbonateddrink
A2: 10 dropsof tap water B2: 10 drops of tap water C2: 10 dropsofcarbonateddrink
A3: 10 dropsof 0.1 M NaOH B3: 10 drops of 0.1 M NaOH

2. Add 2 drops of universal indicator solution into wells A1–A4 and C1. Stir the solution in eachwell with a clean plastic microspatula to avoid cross-contamination.
3. Note the color of the solution in each well and write your observations in Table 2.
4. Add 2 drops of purple cabbage juice into wells B1–B4 and C2. Stir the solution in each well with a clean plastic microspatula to avoid cross-contamination.
5. Note the color of the solution in each well and write your observations in Table 3.
Data:
Use the indicator color and descriptions provided in Table 1 and/or the pH scale in Figure 3 to describe the acidity/basicity of the solutions in wells A1–A4, B1–B4 and C1–C2. Record whether the solutions are very acidic, slightly acidic, neutral, slightly basic or very basicin the space provided in Tables 2 and 3.

2. Os estudantes serão capazes de explicar, utilizando termos científicos, o que faz uma solução ser ácida ou básica.
Procedimento experimental:
Neste experimento, os estudantes medirão o pH de diferentes soluções utilizando um indicador universal e um indicador de suco de repolho roxo. O suco de repolho roxo pode ser preparado como indicado abaixo.
Suco de repolho roxo (Referência 2):
1. Corte um repolho roxo em pequenos pedaços, coloque 2-3 xícaras de repolho fatiado em uma panela e cubra com água.
2. Desligar o fogo quando a solução começar a ferver e, em seguida, deve-se esperar 30 minutos para que a mesma esfrie.
3. Deve-se filtrar a água do repolho utilizando um coador e despejando-a em um frasco ou em um copo de medição grande. O líquido roxo escuro contido na jarra é o indicador de pH líquido.

Descarte de resíduos:

Observações:
• Pode-se usar quaisquer amostras de água, como por exemplo: água de lago, da torneira, do aquário, bebida gaseificada, etc. É recomendado ter um exemplo de solução ácida, neutra e alcalina.
