Source text - English Greece has erased what used to be a very large current account deficit between 2007 and 2016. This would appear to be good news, but it is not. The reason is that the deficit was reduced by Greece cutting back on imports, not on boosting exports, a result of a dramatic drop in economic output.
A reduction of the trade deficit through a decrease in imports is usually welcome when high imports reflect an unsustainable boom. Greece's output gap, a measure of how much an economy is operating above or below its optimal level, was 8.9 percent in 2007 based on the latest data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Ideally, Greece would have eased the output gap to zero percent and lowered imports in the process. Instead, economic output collapsed to a level far below potential, with the gap reaching –11.8 percent in 2016.

Source text - English To see why the economy needs to orient toward a new purpose, it helps to remember where the concept “the economy” came from. The economy, as it is now understood, began relatively recently. Before the eighteenth century, farmers, tradesmen, craftsmen, and other businesspeople sold, traded, and bartered their goods and services within well-defined social contexts. Economic activity took place within the social order and as part of social life. That economy was closely tied to the fluctuations of the local environment and climate. The Woodstock Farm Market would have felt right at home in the eighteenth century.
During the course of that century, the economy broke away more and more from its ties to communities, the local environment, and the social order. Land ownership became a more powerful basis for asserting economic might, industry and manufacturing began to take off as a result of technical innovation, a larger and increasingly wealthy elite started accumulating enormous financial power, and long-distance trade expanded significantly. Although banks have existed for thousands of years, the era of modern banking began only in the late eighteenth century. Money and all its baggage— borrowing, interest, credit, speculation—took on a more central role in providing the means of life. More and more, society and the environment became subservient to wealth accumulation and expansion of the economy.

Source text - English A study of why complex societies collapse should begin with a clear picture of what it is that does so. What, in other words, are complex societies? What are their defining characteristics? How do they differ from the simpler societies out of which they developed, and to which they often revert? Are complex societies a discrete type or a 'stage' in cultural evolution, or is there a continuum from simple to complex?
A related question is why complex societies develop. This, as noted, has been a question of perennial interest in the social sciences. Although much is now known about the evolution of complexity, there is no overall consensus about such things as why complexity emerges, why societies become stratified, why the small, independent groups of early human history have given way to the large, interdependent states of recent millennia. This is without doubt a fascinating topic, and one that offers a tempting diversion for the present work. It is a diversion that will largely have to be resisted. It cannot be wholly resisted, for collapse may not be understood except in the context of how complex societies function and operate, and that cannot be divorced from the question of how they have come into being. (As in any scientific endeavor, one question leads to another, one problem appears connected to all others, and one of the most difficult tasks is simply to draw boundaries to the inquiry.) To explain collapse it will be necessary to discuss, briefly, alternative general views of how complex societies have developed, and to evaluate the usefulness and relevance of these views to the problem at hand. The lively and interesting debate over what (if any) are the prime movers in the development of complexity is regrettably only partially pertinent. Accordingly, it will be treated in only a partial fashion.
