Source text - Spanish Tradicionalmente, el término monja de clausura hace referencia a la obligación que tienen estas señoras de no salir del recinto que habitan, en el que, supuestamente, tampoco pueden entrar personas ajenas a la residencia. Hoy en día las normas han cambiado: a pesar de conservar la esencia, no son tan estrictas. Claro ejemplo de ello son las cinco monjas clarisas residentes en el convento Santa Clara de la localidad guipuzcoana de Tolosa, donde este orden lleva más de 400 años.
El convento de Santa Clara se construyó entre los siglos XVII y XVIII. Está ubicado dentro del casco urbano de la localidad, y en 1964 fue declarado Monumento Histórico—Artístico de interés provincial. "El Papa Juan Pablo II dispuso antes de morir que cada convento de clausura podía regular su funcionamiento, y cierto es que las cosas han cambiado y hoy en día tenemos más contacto con el exterior. Aunque tampoco salimos por salir, lo hacemos únicamente cuando nos parece realmente necesario: a comprar medicinas, a la compra, a visitar a familias que nos lo piden y realmente lo necesitan, etc. Nos turnamos para ello. No sentimos la necesidad de alejarnos del convento. Residir aquí es nuestra manera de servir a Dios. Aquí nos sentimos felices y en paz", explica Micaela Urroz, madre abadesa del convento.
Son muchas las preguntas que los tolosarras se hacen respecto a las monjas de Santa Clara. "La gente nos pregunta si no nos aburrimos. ¿Aburrirnos? No sabemos lo que significa esa palabra". En realidad tienen un horario muy estricto y el día organizado para realizar diversas tareas. A las 7.30 h se despiertan y acuden a la iglesia a rezar. A las 8 h celebran una misa abierta a todo el mundo. A las 9 h rezan en privado y seguidamente van a desayunar.
La madre abadesa Micaela es una de las encargadas de preparar la custodia para la misa. Lleva 17 años en el convento de Tolosa. "Nací en Saldias, en un pequeño pueblecito de Navarra, y allí residí hasta que cumplí los 18 años y me fui a trabajar como sirvienta a Francia. Siempre me gustaron las monjas, desde muy pequeñita me disfrazaba delante del espejo y jugaba a ser una de ellas. Tras mi vuelta de Francia a los 23 años lo vi claro. Quería ser monja. Jesucristo murió por nosotros, y qué mejor manera de agradecérselo que dedicar la vida a servirle. Amor con amor se paga", asegura Micaela, aunque recuerda que los inicios fueron complicados. "Me pasé día y medio llorando cuando me incorporé al convento de clausura, pero ahora sé que mi decisión fue la correcta y me siento muy feliz. Llevo aquí diecisiete años y me siento muy feliz formando parte de esta comunidad".
Tras la misa y sus respectivas oraciones las monjas se reúnen en el comedor para desayunar. "Desayunamos todos los días a las 9.30, un desayuno muy sencillo: leche y pan. Tras recoger todo y fregar nos queda un poquito de tiempo libre hasta las 10 h para que cada una haga lo que le resulte oportuno. Normalmente aprovechamos ese tiempo para organizar nuestro cuarto, leer o simplemente dar un paseo. A las 10 h es hora de trabajar. Cada una tiene asignadas varias tareas, aunque si la tarea es especial la hacemos entre todas, como hacer dulces para ocasiones especiales, etc. Yo, como madre abadesa que soy, represento a la comunidad y puedo tomar pequeñas decisiones sin consultar, aunque casi nunca se da el caso porque funcionamos como grupo: las decisiones más importantes las tomamos entre todas", cuenta Micaela.
A las 10 h comienzan sus tareas diarias. A Sor María Rosario se le ha asignado la limpieza de parte del convento, que realiza siempre con una sonrisa en la boca. "Tengo 81 años y llevo 61 en este convento. La vocación de ser monja no me surgió desde niña, hasta los veinte años tuve una vida que disfruté como cualquier otra adolescente. Trabajé en varios lugares de Tolosa como sirvienta hasta que lo vi claro: quería ser monja de clausura. No tuve ningún problema en entrar en el convento, me amoldé enseguida".
En aquellos tiempos el convento estaba a tope. "Éramos cuarenta monjas, y a día de hoy solo quedamos cinco. No sé que pasará cuando nosotras faltemos, no hay relevo generacional, se están cerrando muchos conventos". Sor María Rosario mantiene su tono jovial incluso cuando se refiere a ella misma y a su colectivo: "me hace mucha gracia el concepto que tiene la gente de nosotras. No somos extraterrestres, somos mujeres normales, trabajamos en nuestras tareas a diario. Simplemente hemos decidido dedicar la vida a Dios".
Planchar, limpiar, regar las plantas... Las monjas se encargan de que el convento se mantenga impoluto. Y es que donde fueron cuarenta ahora únicamente son cinco. No hay tiempo que perder, hay que aprovechar las horas del día al máximo.
Sor María Lourdes Jáuregi se dedica principalmente a planchar y doblar la ropa, ya que su enfermedad le impide andar. "Nací en Zaldibia (Guipúzcoa), a los 10 años dejé la escuela para trabajar, cuidando niños durante varios años y de sirvienta en un hotel de San Sebastián otros cuantos. Con 23 años decidí hacerme monja. Hoy tengo 85. Yo no era monja de clausura, mi decisión de ser interna la tomé hace unos 8 años porque mi enfermedad ya me impedía andar. Hasta entonces yo era la encargada de hacer todos los recados en el exterior, ahora en cambio me dedico a planchar y doblar la ropa, mucho más no puedo hacer".

No solo cocinan, limpian y preparan la ropa: las monjas también tienen una huerta y ovejas que tienen que atender diariamente. "Tenemos mucho trabajo que hacer, aparte de planchar, limpiar, coser, cocinar... también tenemos una huerta que hay que cuidar y diez ovejas que tampoco podemos descuidar", asegura la madre abadesa. Las ovejas pastan en los terrenos pertenecientes al convento y para esquilarlas, ordeñarlas y otros quehaceres cuentan con ayuda externa.
"Mucha gente del pueblo se pregunta de qué vivimos. Pues tenemos nuestra jubilación por los años cotizados y de vez en cuando asociaciones o grupos grandes nos traen ropa para limpiar y planchar, por lo que cobramos un poquito. Nos es imposible vender dulces, porque para ello se necesitan muchos permisos. Sí que los hacemos, pero para nosotras mismas en ocasiones especiales o para ofrecerlos a la gente que viene de visita", explica Micaela.

La vida dentro del convento de Santa Clara es un misterio para la gente del pueblo, que lo considera un lugar inaccesible. "Para nada somos ni vivimos como la gente se cree. Somos humildes, sencillas, trabajadoras, simpáticas y muy divertidas. Creo que se tiene una visión equivocada de nosotras. Antaño sí que era todo mucho más estricto, pero los tiempos han cambiado", comenta Micaela riéndose.
"Nos divertimos mucho realizando nuestras tareas diarias, humor no nos falta. Aquí nos sentimos en paz con nosotras mismas. Muchas veces, cuando por una circunstancia excepcional tenemos el deber de salir fuera por unos días, en realidad estamos deseando volver. No sentimos la necesidad de salir. La vida que hemos elegido, la vida dentro del convento es lo que realmente nos satisface. Es una rutina como la de cualquier persona de la calle. Al fin y al cabo todos tenemos nuestra propia rutina que se resume en trabajar y tener tiempo libre para dedicarlo a lo que más nos guste", explica sonriente la madre abadesa mientras saca a las ovejas y echa un vistazo al huerto junto con algunas de sus hermanas.
Y es que Santa Clara, en pleno trajín del día a día, es un no parar. "La huerta tiene mucho trabajo. A veces pedimos ayuda externa para mantenerla. Recogemos lo sembrado para cocinar, nunca lo vendemos. Ahora, en esta época recogemos la vainas y a pesar de ser mucho trabajo nos lo pasamos realmente bien realizándolo. Yo siempre me pongo una visera para protegerme del sol, al resto de las hermanas les hace mucha gracia", nos cuenta Sor María Rosario. Al finalizar la recogida de productos de la huerta, es hora de cocinar, tarea para la que las hermanas se van turnando.
A la una es la hora de comer en el convento. El menú no suele salirse de lo habitual: verduras, legumbres... Una vez retirada la mesa y finalizada la tarea de fregado, las hermanas cuentan con tiempo libre, hasta la cuatro, para dedicarlo a sus aficiones. "Me gusta mucho hacer deporte, para ello cuento con una bicicleta estática y una cinta de correr que aprovecho cada vez que tenemos un ratito libre", cuenta Sor María Cruz. "A mí me gusta leer y tocar el piano, suelo dedicar los ratos libres a ello. Tenemos aficiones normales, como las del resto de la gente, y, cómo no, las practicamos cada vez que podemos", nos explica Micaela.
Sor María Cruz Pérez, aficionada al deporte nos relata su historia mientras pedalea en la bici estática. "Nací en Bilbao hace 49 años, estudié corte y confección con unas monjas. Un día mi madre quiso hacer ejercicios espirituales en un convento de La Rioja y también me invitaron a mí. Una vez entre en el convento, jamás volví a salir, lo vi muy claro, quería ser monja de clausura. Pasé allí once años, hasta que las monjas fueron muriendo y tuvimos que cerrarlo. Las pocas que quedamos fuimos reubicadas. A día de hoy llevo dieciocho años en el convento de Tolosa y me siento muy feliz. Normalmente realizo todas las tareas que puedo, pero ahora mismo mi labor más importante es la de enfermera, ya que tenemos una hermana enferma que necesita cuidados. Aquí nos cuidamos mucho unas a otras".
A las cuatro en punto las hermanas vuelven a rezar hasta las cinco menos cuarto, cuando reanudan sus tareas. "Es nuestra responsabilidad también acondicionar los cuartos apropiadamente para las personas que vienen al convento a pasar unos días de retiro. No son pocas las personas que acuden a nosotras en busca de tranquilidad en una época dura para ellas. Por ejemplo hemos alojado a varias que en época de exámenes han necesitado tranquilidad y un silencio absoluto para concentrarse. Para ello contamos con varias habitaciones acondicionadas, una pequeña cocina y una pequeña sala de estar para que puedan disfrutar sin que nadie les moleste", explica Micaela, una de las encargadas de preparar dicho alojamiento, quien asegura vivir de forma austera. "En nuestras habitaciones, disponemos de una cama, un armario y un pequeño lavabo. Respecto a lo que tenemos dentro del armario, no tenemos gran cosa. Ropa íntima, un par de hábitos, ropa de trabajo y calzado", cuenta la madre abadesa.
Dentro de las tareas también se incluye realizar encargos si es necesario y revisar el correo. "Sí, tenemos internet, ya que mediante correo nos comunicamos con nuestras familias, lo utilizamos para mandar fotos etc. Normalmente soy yo la que lo utilizo. A pesar de que hoy en día con las nuevas normas podemos visitar a nuestras familias si les surgiera algún problema, no está de más comunicarnos también vía e-mail. Los encargos en la calle, en cambio, los hace Sor María Cruz, que es la más joven", explica la madre abadesa. Ella es la encargada de dar permiso al resto de hermanas que necesitan salir al exterior: "normalmente no hay ningún problema en salir al exterior incluso para varios días si la razón está justificada. Si fuera un período muy largo en cambio deberíamos de pedirle permiso al obispo".
Sor Genoveva, hermana de Sor María Rosario, tiene 76 años y lleva 49 en el convento de Tolosa. "Hasta los 27 estuve trabajando, primero en el caserío familiar y luego como sirvienta. Estoy convencida de que la vocación me venía desde pequeña. Recuerdo que vestía a mis muñecas como monjas. La verdad es que tenía una vida feliz, incluso salía con un chico, pero sentía un vacío dentro de mí que no sabría explicar. Definitivamente decidí entrar en el convento. Mi decisión fue la correcta, ahora me siento realizada", nos explica.
A las 18.30 h termina el horario de visitas del convento, ya que las hermanas acuden a rezar a la iglesia hasta las 20 h, hora de la cena. Micaela asegura que les encanta recibir visitas: "nos encanta charlar con la gente. Para las visitas preparamos rosquillas y un poquito de vino dulce si tienen la edad apropiada. Nos gusta mucho intercambiar opiniones, hablar, contar y que nos cuenten".
Después de los rezos y la formación personal, las monjas acuden a cenar a las ocho en punto. Tras la cena van a ver las noticias en la televisión. "No vivimos en una burbuja, sabemos todo el sufrimiento que hay fuera y rezamos por ello.Después de ver el informativo, tras una breve oración, hacia las 22 h nos acostamos. Madrugamos mucho y al final del día terminamos agotadas"
Translation - English Traditionally, the term cloister nun refers to the vow these women make not to leave the enclosure they live in, and supposedly outsiders aren’t allowed in either. Nowadays the rules have changed: despite preserving the main principles, they’ve become less strict. A good example of this is the five Gipuzkoan nuns of St Clare, an order that has resided in Tolosa, in the Basque country of northern Spain, for more than 400 years.
The convent of St Clare was built between the 17th and 18th century. It is located in the centre of the town, and in 1964 was declared an Artistic Historic Monument of Provincial Interest. “Pope John Paul II declared before he died that every cloistered convent would be permitted to run itself, and the truth is that things have changed and nowadays we have more contact with the outside world. We don’t go out for the sake of it though, we only do when we think it really necessary: to buy medicine, to buy food, to visit families that ask us to and really need it, etc. We take it in turns. We don’t feel the need to get away from the convent. Living here is our way of serving God. Here we feel happy and peaceful”, explains Micaela Urroz, the convent’s Mother Abbess.
The people of Tolosa have a lot of questions regarding the nuns of St Clare. “People ask us if we get bored. Bored? We don’t know the meaning of the word.” In fact they have a very strict schedule and the day is organised around various duties. At 7.30am they wake up and go to church to pray. At 8 o’clock they hold an open Mass for everyone. At 9 o’clock they pray in private and then go straight to breakfast.
Mother Abbess Micaela is one of those in charge of preparing the monstrance for Mass. She has been at the convent in Tolosa for 17 years. “I was born in Saldías, in a small town in Navarre (in the Basque country), where I lived until I turned 18 and went to work as a maid in France. I always liked nuns; from a very young age I would dress up in front of the mirror and pretend to be one. After coming back from France as a 23-year-old it was clear to me. I wanted to be a nun. Jesus Christ died for us, and what better way to thank him than to dedicate my life to serving him. Love is with love repaid”, says Micaela, even though she remembers that in the beginning it was complicated. “I spent a day and a half crying when I joined the cloistered convent, but now I know my decision was right and I feel very happy. I’ve been here for 17 years and I feel very happy to be part of this community”.
After Mass and their personal prayers, the nuns meet in the dining room for breakfast. “We have breakfast every day at 9.30, a very simple breakfast: milk and bread. After clearing everything away and washing up we have a bit of free time until 10 for everyone to do what they feel is appropriate. We normally make use of this time to tidy our rooms, read or simply go for a walk. At 10 o’clock it’s time for work. Everyone has several designated duties, although if the task is a special one then we do it all together, like making sweet things for special occasions, etc. I, as Mother Abbess, represent the community and I can make some small decisions without consulting the others, although this is hardly ever the case because we work as a group: we make the most important decisions all together”, says Micaela.
At 10 o’clock their daily chores begin. Sister María Rosario has been assigned to do the cleaning by the convent, which she always does with a smile on her face. “I’m 81 years old and I’ve been in this convent for 61 of them. The calling to be a nun didn’t come to me as a child, and until I was twenty I had a life that I enjoyed like any other teenager. I worked as a maid in various places in Tolosa until it became clear: I wanted to be a cloister nun. I didn’t have any problems going into the convent, I adjusted right away”.
In those days the convent was packed. “There used to be forty nuns here, and now there are only five left. I don’t know what will happen when we’re gone; the new generation isn’t replacing the old one and a lot of convents are closing”. Sister María Rosario keeps her cheerful manner even when talking about herself and the others: “It really makes me laugh to think of the idea that people have of us. We aren’t extraterrestrials, we are normal women, and we do our daily duties. We’ve simply decided to dedicate our lives to God”.
Ironing, cleaning, watering the plants… The nuns take charge of keeping the convent spotless. And where there were once forty, now there are only five. There is no time to lose; they have to make the most of the hours of the day.
Sister María Lourdes Jáuregi devotes her time chiefly to ironing and folding the laundry, now that her illness hinders her walking. “I was born in Zaldibia (Gipuzkoa, Basque country), and at 10 years old I left school for work, looking after children for several years and as a maid in a San Sebastian hotel for a few more. At 23 I decided to become a nun. Now I’m 85. I wasn’t a cloister nun before; I decided to join the cloister 8 years ago because my illness was already stopping me from walking. Until then I was the one responsible for all the errands outside the convent, whereas now I iron and fold the laundry, as I can’t do much else”.
They don’t just cook, clean and do the laundry: the nuns also have an allotment and some sheep that they have to attend to daily. “We have a lot of work to do, aside from ironing, cleaning, sewing, cooking… we also have a vegetable garden to look after and ten sheep that mustn’t be forgotten”, says the Mother Abbess. The sheep graze in the fields of the convent and for shearing, milking and other jobs, they rely on outside help.
“Many people from the town wonder what we live on. We have our pensions based on our years of employment, and from time to time associations or organisations bring us clothes to wash and iron, for which we charge a small fee. We can’t sell sweet things, because you need lots of permits for this. We do make them, but for ourselves on special occasions or to give to people who come and visit”, explains Micaela.
Life inside the convent of St Clare is a mystery for the people of Tolosa, who consider it an inaccessible place. “Our lives aren’t at all like people think. We are humble, simple, hardworking, kind, and lots of fun. I think people get the wrong idea about us. In the past it was a lot stricter, but the times have changed”, says Micaela, laughing.
“We have a lot of fun doing our daily duties, we aren’t lacking in a sense of humour. Here we feel at peace with ourselves. Often, when for some exceptional circumstance we have to leave for a few days, we’re actually looking forward to coming back. We don’t feel the need to go out. The life we’ve chosen, the life in the convent is what really satisfies us. It’s a routine like anyone else’s. At any rate, we all have our own routine, which is made up of work and free time, dedicated to whatever we most like doing”, explains the smiling Mother Abbess while she puts the sheep out and looks over the allotment along with some of her Sisters.
And the fact is, St Clare in full daily grind is non-stop. “The allotment is a lot of work. Sometimes we ask for outside help to maintain it. We pick what we’ve grown for cooking; we never sell it. At the moment we’re picking the green beans and even though it’s a lot of work we really have a nice time doing it. I always wear a visor to protect me from the sun, it makes the other Sisters laugh a lot”, Sister María Rosario tells us. After picking the produce from the allotment, it’s time to cook, a task the Sisters take in turns.
One o’clock is lunchtime in the convent. The menu doesn’t usually deviate from the usual: vegetables, legumes… Once the table is cleared and the washing up is done, the Sisters have free time to spend on their hobbies until four o’clock. “I really like sport, which I have an exercise bike and a treadmill for, and I make use of them at every spare moment”, says Sister María Cruz. “I like reading and playing piano, so I normally spend free time doing this. We have normal pastimes just like other people, and of course, we do them when ever we can”, explains Micaela.
Sister María Cruz Pérez, sport enthusiast, tells us her story while peddling on her exercise bike. “I was born in Bilbao 49 years ago, and I studied dressmaking with nuns. One day my mother wanted to do some spiritual exercises in a convent in La Rioja and they invited me too. Once I had entered the convent, I never left. It was very clear to me, I wanted to be a cloister nun. I spent eleven years there, until the nuns started dying and we had to close it. The few of us that remained were relocated. Now I’ve been the Tolosa convent for eighteen years and I feel very happy. Normally I carry out all the duties I can, but right now my most important work is being a nurse, seeing as we have a Sister who is ill and needs to be cared for. Here we really look after one another”.
At four o’clock the Sisters pray again until quarter to five, when they resume their duties. “It’s also our responsibility to prepare the bedrooms properly for the people that come to the convent to spend a few days in retreat. There are quite a few who come to us looking for relief during a difficult period. For example we lodged several women who, during exam period, needed peace and absolute silence to concentrate. For this we use various rooms that are set-up, a small kitchen and sitting room that they can enjoy without being bothered by anyone”, explains Micaela, one of those in charge of preparing the mentioned lodging, which guarantees an austere lifestyle. “In our rooms, we have a bed, a wardrobe, and a little sink at our disposal. What we keep inside the wardrobe isn’t much. Underwear, a couple of habits, work clothes and footwear”, says the Mother Abbess.
Duties also include making orders when necessary and checking email. “Yes, we have internet, seeing as we use email to communicate with our families, send photos, etc. Normally I’m the one who uses it. Even though nowadays with the new rules we can visit our families if a problem arises, it doesn’t hurt to communicate with them via email as well. Whereas the errands outside the convent are done by Sister María Cruz, who is the youngest”, explains the Mother Abbess. She is in charge of giving the other Sisters permission to leave: “Normally there’s no problem with leaving the convent even for a few days if there’s a good reason. If it were for a very long period however, we’d have to ask the bishop for permission”.
Sister Genoveva, who is Sister María Rosario’s (familial) sister, is 76 years old and has been in the Tolosa convent for 49 years. “I worked until I was 27, first in the family farmhouse and later as a maid. I’m convinced that the calling came to me when I was little. I remember dressing my dolls up as nuns. The truth is I had a very happy life, even going out with a boy, but I felt an empty space within me that I wouldn’t know how to explain. I decided to move into the convent permanently. My decision was the right one, now I feel fulfilled”, she explains.
At 6.30pm visiting hours at the convent are over, as the Sisters go to church to pray until dinnertime at 8pm. Micaela insists that they love receiving visitors: “We love chatting with people. For visitors we prepare doughnuts and a bit of sweet wine if they’re old enough. We like to exchange opinions, talk, tell stories and listen to them too”.
After prayers and personal development, the nuns go to have dinner at eight o’clock. After dinner they watch the news on television. “We don’t live in a bubble, we know all the suffering that there is out there and we pray for them. After watching the news and saying a quick prayer, we go to bed at about 10pm. We often get up early and then we’re exhausted at the end of the day”.

I am a qualified and experienced media and humanities translator, working from French and Spanish to my native British English. I live in the south of Spain, and I have a C1 level in both French and Spanish.
I have four years experience translating media content: in the past I have worked with the BBC as a transcriber/translator, and I currently work freelance for VICE.com, translating articles of varying subject matter from French and Spanish to English.
I have a Master's with grade Distinction in Translation and Interpreting from Manchester University (UK).
