Source text - English According to attachment theory, our earliest interactions with a primary caregiver become internalized as mental models, or internal working models, that serve to guide our social behavior and our social expectations across the life span. A secure working model is characterized by a basic sense of trust that others will be dependable and available to us, particularly during times of stress. By contrast, insecure working models may be described as anxious’ or avoidant. Anxiousness reflects a strong desire for intimacy coupled with a fear of abandonment, whereas avoidance reflects discomfort with closeness due to the expectation that others will be neglectful or intrusive.
As adults, secure individuals report having more positive relationship experiences, larger social support networks, and more satisfaction with their support. Individuals who are more anxious or avoidant, by contrast, report experiencing greater emotional ups and downs in their relationships,
smaller social support networks, and less satisfaction with their support. Having a strong and satisfying social support network available has been positively linked to physical health and lowered mortality risk, as well as to emotional well-being. In consequence, it seems important to attempt to delineate the mechanisms that may lead to better support outcomes for more secure individuals and worse support outcomes for more anxious or avoidant individuals.
One explanation for avoidant individuals’ weaker support outcomes may be that more avoidant individuals are both less likely to seek out support from others and less likely to offer support to others. For example, Simpson found that avoidant women tend to seek less support from their male partners (compared to secure women) the more distressed they are.
Another possible explanation for poorer support networks among more avoidant and more anxious individuals is that less secure individuals may lack the necessary interpersonal skills required to develop strong and satisfying networks. A number of studies have specifically linked social competence to the development and adaptive use of social support networks. For more anxiously and more avoidantly attached individuals, early exposure to poor social models and high levels of social anxiety may result in less overall interpersonal competence. These deficits in interpersonal competence, in turn, may limit the ability of more anxiously attached and more avoidantly attached individuals to form and maintain quality social ties.
