Source text - English The rapid growth of population and motor vehicle ownership, the physical expansion of the cities, and the highly mobile lifestyle of residents also resulted in the opening of new areas for tourism and travel, as well as greater accessibility to tourism areas for a wider variety and larger number of people. Indeed, domestic tourism really started to flourish.
The increasingly important role tourism started to play in the national economy meant government support for, and participation in the development of tourism grew rapidly during this time – particularly in the middle and late 1950’s in Victoria and Queensland and the early 1960’s in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Along with the efforts of the domestic airlines and coach tour operators, Government support for, and participation in tourism began to bring noticeably greater benefits to the tourist industries of these States and the Northern Territory, and led to investments in the development of new and improved facilities (especially accommodation) and new resorts at dispersed points around Australia.
Government interest in tourism also led to modifications in organisation and methods of tourist administration, development and promotion; and these activities, in turn, have had an important influence on matters such as the improvement of highways and the opening up of national parks and foreshores for tourism and conservation.
Today, Australia is the tenth largest tourism market internationally, and transport remains an important element of its tourism potential. Australia’s geographical scale continues to demand major investment in transport infrastructure, not only to support the tourism industry but also to ensure regional development and a competitive economy.
The ‘tyranny of distance’ which once held back the growth of inbound tourism to Australia certainly has certainly been largely overcome as a consequence of modern aviation developments; and into the future, aviation is expected to remain a positive factor for Australian tourism, with forecasts of stronger loads and yields on Australian routes.
