I got an email via Proz from [email protected] wanting me to translate psychology articles. That domain name does not exist. He says it's because he's starting a new company and doesn't yet have a website. He is not listed at Proz.com. I suspect it's a scam and have declined the offer, but I post it in case it resonates with anybody else.

Forgive me for splitting hairs: the domain name *does* exist, but there is no web site at that domain. This is not unusual in itself. I have encountered it before that people register a domain name for e-mail purposes without having a web site at that domain.
Did he provide any contact details? Does he claim to represent a company or is he trying to get translations in his personal capacity?

My error. This may very well be legit, but I'm suspicious, especially after getting three scam job offers in the last six months or so (one of which I fell for).

I don't think this is suspicious per se. I have had a domain name for e-mail for 14 years, but no web site. I had enough work without one. Now the pandemic has all but killed the market segment I am in, so I am thinking of making one to attract a wider circle of clients.

How do I find the IP address (my account is with gmail)? I looked at the "source" but can't figure out what to do with that string of numbers and letters.

I ran into a few biz contacts with no-website land pages, yet I'm more concerned about those who are writing behalf on the company from corporate emails without working there any longer.
Having a white (static) IP, it's possible to set up even own mailserver like ICQ, Viber, and other software--right on the SDD/HDD. It's possible with a dynamic (gray) IP, but requires much tweaking though.
Susan, you should downloda/save the email as txt first.

I can't tell you whether he's a scammer or legitimate, but I think he was quite likely a legitimate client. His story tallies with what Samuel found and, unless you know things you haven't shared, there's really nothing to suggest that he's a scammer.

He gave his first name only and said he'd seen a forum post and would I look at some song lyrics. That was NOT a good s... However, when asked to give far more details, it turned out he was totally legit, and I've been collaborating with him all month.
I do hope you'll inform yourself about all the potential clues pointing to a scam, and all the measures you can take to check out potentially legitimate (or not) clients. The former is done by checking out this forum and the Scam Centre and signing up for notifications from there. The latter is done by Googling for measures related to "due diligence" and "risk management". ▲ Collapse

When faced with similar situations (the client is not registered or it's not possible to check their legitimacy) I usually ask for 100% advance payment or a down payment via PayPal, depending on the size of the job.
I also refer them to my WWA page (Feedback from my clients, which is publicly displayed on Proz and accessibleby non-members) so they can also check my own legitimacy.
