What could we discuss about? About opinions and comments that some people have made about other people's opinions and comments about the opinions and comments of yet another group of people ..(repeat few times)....about the subject matter? Or is anyone who wants to say anything while knowing what they are talking about supposed to fork CHF118 (around US $ 122, £100, EUR 112) just to see what exactly is all the fuss about?

Imagine if you had to pay CHF118 every time you want to check the exact content of one single law??? For those not in the habit of "vérifier à la source" in most countries the whole of the current legislation is available online for free, and rightly so. The least you can do if you expect anyone to follow some rules is make them readily available.

So, unless someone can quote verbatim the content of this new standard, I can't see what is it to talk about regarding this article.

OTOH there would be a lot to talk about the cavalier way too many legal translations are done ...

Great Presentation by UK Association of Translation Companies May 26, 2020

The free ATC presentation was excellent. It went over the entire standard.

I found the first 1/2 of the standard available online for free. Buying the standard is a part of the certification process. It will be an expense (so a tax deduction).

Right now, if a translator meets the standard they can say they "comply" with the standard even though there is no certification process in place yet. They can't say they are certified.

I found the first 1/2 of the standard available online for free. Buying the standard is a part of the certification process. It will be an expense (so a tax deduction).

Right now, if a translator meets the standard they can say they "comply" with the standard even though there is no certification process in place yet. They can't say they are certified.

Certification would cost 1/2 of what translation agencies have to pay for their audit and certification, that is around 800 pounds for a freelancer. There would be annual audits and re-certifications that could be done remotely, but I don't know how much that would cost.

The standard has been adopted, so it is now an official international standard.

In the UK and US, this standard does not prevent anyone from delivering a legal translation because the UK has not adopted the standard as a legal requirement.

Germany objected because it has its own legal requirements for legal translators. The UK and the US do not.

The standard contains qualification requirements, process requirements (translation-proofreading-final revisions), and continuing education requirements.

Another way to reduce the cost of buying the standard would be to join an association that provides it for free to its members.
