I choose Video, Open... and browse to the MP4 file to open it in Subtitle Workshop. But I get an error message upon doing that:

Error. Unsupported media file (filename.mp4).

I have the latest version of Subtitle Workshop installed.

Video Format not Supporte Sep 4, 2020

Hi, Try to use the AVI/MPEG Subtitle Workshop is not working with the other format. Don't worry if the client wish to have hard-coded video, as Subtitle Workshop couldn't make a hard-subbed video.

Do you mean I should find another software than Subtitle Workshop? Sep 4, 2020

I'm not quite following you now: do you mean I should skip Subtitle Workshop and find something else, a software that can handle MP4 files?

If so, would Spot Software be a viable option (if I rent it, too expensive to buy right on the spot...)?

And I can't even hard-code with Subtitle Workshop do you mean? I definitely need to do that as well.

Codecs Sep 5, 2020

I'm not a SW user but when I googled your problem, I notice, many had the same issue before. Updating Codecs seems like the solution. Just an idea.

Codecs was it, you are right Sarper Sep 5, 2020

You are right Sarper, it's codecs that I need to download. I signed up for a trial of Spot, and after installation I need to download a codec pack to be able to open all kind of file types. The same with Subtitle Workshop then.

What I meant is:

Subtitle Workshop not supporting video with the format MP4 and some other format (I do not remember what are the formats rejected by Subtitle Workshop).

Sometime installed software is very picky rather than portable version.

Try download any video converter. AVI format should works well with Subtitle workshop.
