I guess that you're referring to me? FYI: I'm just a regular user (I have no connections with Collaborative Translation Networks, LLC).

You can find the developer of CafeTran Espresso 2018 here: https://www.proz.com/profile/88214

But does that reflect product quality or just number of users?

Someone could count the number of answers to these postings in one month or so. Would hardly change the overall picture.
Are Across, Transit and DV widely (wildly) used software with little technical issues? I doubt it.

There are several reasons, I guess.

  • Complexity of the software, esp. its GUI
  • Availability of good documentation
  • Number of bugs
  • Nifty tricks that someone wants to share with fellow users of her favourite tool

Those two characteristics are not mutually exclusive. I use Transit for one client perforce, and I don't think it's very good, nor do there seem to be many users, at least going by the lack of activity in this forum, or any other forum. So it's possible to have poor product quality and a small number of users. Not an achievement of which I would be particularly proud, but there you go - maybe there's some connection there.

And I suppose it is possible to have high quality and many users, though some would dispute SDL's claim to quality. I find Studio mostly okay, but with many niggling, unaddressed flaws that prevent me from developing more than a grudging, qualified respect for the software.

Interesting to see that Déjà Vu, which a few years ago used to be spoken of in the same breath as MemoQ and Studio, has so little activity on this forum. This seems to confirm my perception that it has been losing ground. Memsource, a relative newcomer that was not launched until earlier this decade, has 13 posts since the beginning of 2018. That's one more than DV, which dates back to the 1990s, and the same as Transit, which also has its origins in the early 1990s.
