CTP Sep 30, 2016

Hello
I have done the CTP program and am happy with the outcome. I did learn a lot about the industry, having come from a different field. It is a good place to start and it's self paced. It's oriented towards freelancing though as it teaches a lot about how to manage a business, etc. It doesn't teach so much the techniques of translation but really about all the tools that are needed. I heard about Proz.com on the program, for example.

Good luck to all!

CTP(certified translation professional) program by Global Translation Institute Sep 30, 2016

I just recently completed this program. I found it to be very helpful. I don't know what some are talking about only USD 195, because I paid much more than that.
But there is a check on your person and the test is very controlled. It is limited in time and it is graded very strenuously.

I received my Certificate in the mail within a week of having received my grade, as well as my stamp.

I am thankful for what I have learned going through this program.

I could not take the ATA because, although I have been speaking my second language for 40 years and attended school in that second language, because I do not have official recognition for the things I have translated in the past and do not have training in translation.

Just some thoughts, everyone has to decide for themselves, but if one has not checked all the facts, one should not disclaim a program they do not know anything about. The directors were very helpful and answered all my questions.

CTP advertises on facebook now... Jun 24, 2017

That shows clearly how professional this company is, aiming as many random people as possible...

I was surprised that they didn’t advertise:
"Like our page, share this post on your page and you will participate in a draw for a CTP translator certificate in the languages of your choice"...

Registered and Cancelled Dec 6, 2017

I registered myself to the program during its Black Friday deal. I wanted to hold on to the deal before learning about the program in case it turned out to be something that I was looking for. After registration, I started reading a book offered by them and more information about the certification program, I realized it was not a certification but more of a certificate kind that it was offering. In their website, they use both certification and certificate. I got a little confused about what they are actually trying to sell.

I received a phone call from a person who claims to be in charge of my registration, a few days after I requested the cancellation and a full refund by email. As he asked for my reasons for changing my mind, I gave my sincere opinions. He obviously did not like them at all. Before finalizing our conversation, and while I was still talking, he snapped in in the voice full of frustrations, he said he'd just cancel my registration, and hanged up on me! Oh, he also assured me that I'd regret my decision.

What a customer service they provide.
It seems really ironic to me because they offer:

Certified Financial Modeling Specialist (CFMS) by Financial Modeling Group (FMG)
Certified Investment Banking Associate (CIBA) by Investment Bankers Group (IBG)
Qualified Family Office Professional (QFOP) by Family Office Club
Certified Business Consultant (CBC) by Business Consulting Group (BCG)
Certified Event Management Expert (CEME) by Event Planning & Management Association
Financial Analyst Specialist Certification (FASC) by Finance Training Society
And list goes on... (offered by the same people)

and among them is Customer Service Manager Certificate (CSMC).

Anyway, I'm glad that I had to spend some time on the Internet these days to investigate about them. Because of that, now I'm clear and have gained a focus on a pathway that I should take.

Late to dinner but not for the coffee talk Dec 7, 2017

As some of our colleagues wisely advised in 2009 on this thread, the CTP is a bunch of malarkie. That certificate exists to legitimize the corporation that issues it, and vice versa. In other words, it's kind of a Ponzi scheme.

Proz moderators: please consider the fact that I haven't mentioned specific companies or persons above.

I'm sad to quote the old saying: A fool and his money are soon parted regarding those who say are happy with their CTP certificate. This is not unique to would-be translators, though. There are massage therapists, physical therapists and other occupations that can find an online certificate just like that (fingers snapping sound). Some belated piece of advice for the would-be wise:

1) Ask yourself why you need a certificate in your occupation: is your employer asking for one? Your client? The professional association you want to be a member of?

2) Is the certificate honored or recognized by professional associations? Ask the professional association in question first.

3) If a certificate or certification is lawfully and legitimately required, do your homework, ask established colleagues, read the literature of each institution.

4) Trust your instincts: if a certificate-issuing institution has rules or protocols that seem too easy to be true, then walk away. You don't want to be associated with mediocrity now, do you?

5) Can the certification ever be revoked, on account of misuse/abuse/malpractice?

6) If yes, would that revocation impair your professional activity in any way?

7) If yes, could that certification be replaced by another one, which would eliminate such impairment?

It seems to me that you are very experienced indeed in translation and have a solid background in languages. I wonder whether you might want to take the American Translators Association's practice test to better understand whether you are at a level that would allow you to have a reasonable expectation of passing the ATA certification. That is the most recognised certification in the US and I think that would be what you need.

You can find information about the practice test here: http://www.atanet.org/certification/aboutpractice_test.php

Good luck!

I was about to register in CTP program and you delivered me from that. I think I will get this ATA's hint. Thank you! Obrigada! Grazie mille! Gracias! Merci beaucoup! Arigatô!

I cannot believe it's 9 years! Jul 23, 2018

It is great to know that people listen to what experienced professionals have to say about these "certifications," but it makes me kind of sad to think that this has been going on for over 9 years with people still being misled about certification in the translation industry.

Before you fork out a single dollar, check carefully and remember: true certifications only come from A) associations that are managed by their members and run a credible programme with exacting requirements (e.g. ATA or CIOL); B) public bodies (ministries and state's departments); or C) publicly recognised education institutions (like universities).

Thank you for saving me the time and money Sep 12, 2018

I am new to the translation world, and I feel like there has to be an easier way to break into the freelance business. That being said, I am struggling to get my foot in the door, and I came across CTP. Thankfully I did some research about the credibility of the program and came across this thread. I will continue to put the work in, but just wanted to say thank you for saving me the time, hassle and frustration of possibly signing up for this course. Proz.com comes through again.

Thank you for the warning! Dec 17, 2020

Hi,

I wanted to thank everyone in this forum for revealing the truth about CTP.
I was ready to sign up for their program after getting a "discount code" together with a bunch of false promises over the phone.
It is sad to say that they are still selling fake certifications 11 years after the start of this thread.
I hope people continue finding this forum to be able to save their money in time!
