Hello Colleague,

Greetings and i hope you all are keeping safe. I will like to find out what clients look out for in a profile, i have noticed some clients stalking my profile yet won't click the contact button. Can anyone tell me the most important area , requirement or sections of the profile that clients look out for? What exactly do client want while looking at translators profile. I will be glad if someone could give me a hint. I look forward to hearing from you all.

A reliable specialist + guarantees May 24, 2020

Dear Blessing,

As you know, even under 'quarantine' the sensible businessperson seeks the best option (a specialist; a lifesaver) at the reasonably* lowest price. So, the real [end] client just wants the job done (1) properly, (2) timely, (3) as agreed and (4) without problems. You seem to qualify well.

Certainly, spongers and intermediaries prefer the cheapest—those naïve who can be tricked into the bottom-feeders’ segment, which also may be the reason they avoid you.

Sometimes it about [long-term] relations between equal parties or [one-time] disposable jobbing. In your case it may have to do with a somewhat poor FAB (feature-advantage-benefit) presentation, when a prospect cannot find WIIFM—'What's in it for me?'

Furthermore, as a businessman I would still prefer a real specialist in my field with foreign language skills to a linguist, doubting that a decent breadwinner wordsmith may agree to some $0.06/word with ‘discounts’ what often makes way under $0.01/word flat.

Good luck

How can this be improved May 24, 2020

Thank you very much for your kind response, please can you explain further what you mean by poor FAB (Feature advantage presentation) and WIIF? How do you think I can improve on this? I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Your profile looks pretty good as it is. Your Bio could use a little editing - write it as if you are telling your story to the potential client in person. The length is good but I think you could add a bit more about your experience with Nigerian. There are as many different ways of organizing that section as there are translators. It might be helpful to look at other translators' profiles, see which ones you like or don't like, and pick up an idea here and there.

Blessing, while the terms are pretty Googleable, at a glance my eyes caught the “I… I… I… I…” pattern, which is no 30-second elevator speech.

2) You just listed your Features, but how about explaining Advantages and Benefits they could offer to the very customer?

3) Besides a few omissions and bulky structures, there are too many weak verbs (to be/ to do/ to have) and weed words.

4) One can target either end clients or agencies; a very neutral presentation fails both, lacking zest.

5) Also note that politeness, neediness, and powerless language are often confused—especially in different cultures.

There are just five member-competitors in your language pair, so pretend to be a strict client and check their promos too, covering all who-what-where-how-why.

Dear Dziw,

Thank you again for your feedback, i entered those projects while starting up my career at some point I stopped entering them, and i did not border asking the clients for feedback then, many of the clients that i worked with afterwards have provided feedback, i never knew that feedback on collaboration on project listing is also important, thank you this pointer. I shall work on my bio with all the weak points that you all have listed, i am very grateful for your help.... See more
