Coleman National Fish Hatchery
Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Trout returning from the ocean, travel up the Sacramento River and Battle Creek where they are enticed by water flow into the fish hatchery. Eggs are collected, fertilized and incubated artificially until they hatch. The young fish are then raised in ponds at the hatchery until they are sufficient size to be released and return to the ocean....
Dworshak National Fish Hatchery
Dworshak National Fish Hatchery is a "mitigation" hatchery located near Orafino, Idaho. The facility oversees fish returning to spawn on the Clearwater River. The dam at Dworshak blocks access to the historical spawning areas for the steelhead, and it is too steep for a fish ladder.
Both Chinook salmon and steelhead are spawned at the facility. The hatchery attempts to mitigate or make up for some of the lost spawning area by capturing eggs and fertilizing them. The young fish are raised until they are large enough for release.

National Fish Hatchery System
The National Fish Hatchery System was established by the U.S. Congress in 1871 through the creation of a U.S. Commissioner for Fish and Fisheries.
The original purpose of the sytem was to provide domestic food fish to replace declining native fish populations. The role of the System has changed greatly over the past 30 years. Major responsibilities now include helping to recover species listed under the Endangered Species Act, restoring native aquatic populations, mitigating for fisheries lost as a result of federal water projects, and providing fish to benefit Indian Tribes and national wildlife refuges. The System is currently comprised of 70 National Fish Hatcheries, 9 Fish Health Centers, and 7 Fish Technology Centers.
