I am just writing to express my frustration and disappointment that Trados 2017 is again not available for Mac. Again we have to work with Parallels or sth. like that, which makes the hole computer slow, just to can work with Trados. This is very disappointing. I mean, we write the year 2017 now, you can go on with denying Apple, but it is just better than Windows - much more save, much more reliable and at least much faster. I just ask me, why it isn't possible to create a Mac-Version of Trados... See more

Linux? Jun 16, 2017

Same goes for Linux. You would expect that the worlds biggest CAT-tool makes his product available for all common operating systems.

How about using dual boot (with bootcamp)? Jun 16, 2017

If you have a Mac, another alternative would be to install a dual boot with Windows on the other partition (with the Bootcamp assistant). It's not slow at all, unlike an emulation of Windows on Mac os, if you can afford to "sacrifice" a few gigabytes to have another partition on your hard drive. There you can install any programs you would need. Though you would probably need a fan controlling software, since it tends to heat up quickly.

According to this and this data, it looks like the Win-macOS market share ratio could be something like 7-10:1, so that's probably why...

That also seems to indicate that people using Windows are actually able to survive and work without encountering apocalyptic consequences on a daily basis, contrary to what someone may believe and despite all of Windows' horrors and shortcomings.

Beside the mac I have a windows computer with the last version of windows on it. It's full of problems, slow, doesn't work at all compared to the Mac. It makes my life not easy at all.

I am running SDL Studio 2017 with Windows 7 Professional. It is fast, stable and I love it (both Studio and Windows).

Why should SDL produce a version for a minority, there is nothing in it to win for them. Just get a tool that works on a MAC and be happy.

Parallels Jun 18, 2017

I use Studio in Parallels Desktop so I can do everything else in the Mac environment. Not perfect as I too wish it were available for Mac, but better than having to do everything in Windows!!

How old is the PC compared to the Mac, and are they comparable when it comes to specifications? Jun 18, 2017

I have a fairly new PC (1 year) with the latest Windows version, and it works very nice. It is fast - I suspect as fast as a Mac these days, since it has a 0.5 TB SSD disk.

To get a fair comparison between a Mac and a Windows PC the systems have to be comparable. Comparing a 5 year old Windows PC that is half the price of a 1 year old Mac would not be very fair when you compare how they work.

That said I do prefer a Mac, partly because it has less needs of antivirus (although these days the main reason would probably be because there are so many more Windows PCs than Macs so organised crime isn't as interested in infesting Macs as they are Windows), and partly because a Mac in many ways are more user friendly than Windows. The registry is a very bad idea on the part of Microsoft, and my impression is that Apple had a much better decision there.

Thank you very much for the advice. But I have Windows 7 Professional on my laptop - a complete disaster - crashing all the time. May be it just doesn't work with SDL Trados Studio 2015, I have no idea. But it just doesn't work. Slow, unstable, every month new errors.

I work together with in total 82 translators from the Northern countries and The Netherlands. 34 of them use a Mac, most of them with parallels on it (like me). Just a coincidence? Or maybe the market share is not so l

Hello Annette,

I was wondering: Is it really Studio that you want to use on your Mac or do you rather want to process Studio projects? In the latter case, there are solid solutions that work on Mac natively.

Comparison PC versus Mac Jun 19, 2017

Dear Roy,

I fully agree with you - they have to be comparable. In my case it's the other way. Same on my laptop with Windows 7 professional/Studio 2015, and same on the Mac (only the Windows part running over Parallels with Windows 7 professional/Studio 2015 gets stuck, the Mac programmes are still working). The disc space could be the problem on the laptop, but not on the PC

Kind regards

I'll never be happy with this Windows stuff Jun 19, 2017

If I had always backed down, when someone told me to be happy with the things I have or life I live, my life would have been very boring. Maybe more reasonable, but just boring

Kind regards
Annette

You don't really give much information. Macs are usually quite strong and, therefore, expensive when it comes to the hardware, while many PCs are downscaled in comparison. So when you say that your old Mac is a lot faster than your 4 month PC makes me think that your PC is a cheaper model comparatively. I expect it doesn't have a good SSD disk, for instance. My own 1 year old PC has a 0.5 TB SSD disk for the system and a 1 TB harddisk for data, and is quite fast. Perhaps the graphics card and the processor also are downscaled in comparison to the Mac.

One other possibility is that you have got a lot of crap on your PC. Often when you buy a PC at a retailer, the retailer has filled it with a lot of crap software that you don't really want or need. Cleaning it up and get rid of whatever you don't need, might help. Running Ccleaner and to see what programs run on the PC and at least stop them from loading at startup or even uninstall them would in all probability help.

I am able to go away from my PC for a few hours without turning it off. When I come back, I can start working as usual without any problems. So why your system gets stuck seems strange to me. I suspect, though, that you didn't go for good quality, but rather for price when you chosen your PC. My experience these days is that a PC of good quality can compete with a similar Mac. If this is not the case in your instance, it looks to me like you have been unlucky with the model you have chosen, or that the dealer has given you bad advice. (Not all dealers are as trustworthy when it comes to quality.) Personally I prefer to go to a specialist in data that I trust, and to pay for good quality rather than skimping. After all, it's my livelihood we are talking about. (In addition I can deduct the machine from my taxes, which means the machine costs me half the price it would if I were to buy it as a private person.)

Roy
